Indra Develops Next-Generation Naval Point-Defense System for Spanish Navy

Indra, the Spanish technology company, is advancing its naval defense capabilities by developing a next-generation point-defense system specifically for the Spanish Navy. This innovative system incorporates laser-guided interceptors designed to engage maneuvering targets with heightened precision.

The endeavor is part of the SILAEM (Shipborne Launcher System) Special Modernization Program, which has a budget of 51 million euros (approximately $58 million). Indra plans to roll out two distinct versions of the system: one as a stand-alone configuration and another designed for integration within the Spanish Navy’s indigenous combat management system, known as SCOMBA.

This state-of-the-art capability aims to enhance naval vessels’ last line of defense against various threats, including hostile crafts, aerial and surface drones, anti-ship missiles, and coastal attacks. A significant aspect of the system is its open architecture, which guarantees interoperability with various systems and sensors from other manufacturers. This feature positions NATO and allied navies to seamlessly incorporate the new technology into their vessels and adapt their capabilities with additional sensors and technologies over time.

The new point-defense system will include several advanced components, such as an X-band fire-control radar for target acquisition and tracking, a turret, laser-guided missiles, and a sophisticated command-and-control system that serves as the solution’s core.

In comparison to conventional point-defense systems that utilize radar- or infrared-guided interceptors, laser-guided weapons offer several advantages. They provide exceptional terminal accuracy, increased resilience against electronic interference, and reduced production costs. Indra emphasizes that the development of this advanced capability addresses the pressing need for modern naval vessels to maintain a multi-layered defense. This will enable a strategic response to saturation attacks by methodically neutralizing threats at varying ranges and selecting the most appropriate sensor and weaponry based on the situation at hand.
