Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar Saves Lives During Flydubai Flight Emergency
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot associated with flydubai, has been highlighted for his role in protecting passengers during a serious in-flight emergency involving a co-pilot who allegedly attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s systems.
The flight was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children. Captain Machchhar reportedly acted decisively to prevent the situation from escalating and helped safeguard everyone on board.
Captain Machchhar has been associated with flydubai for four years. Before joining the airline, he spent around 10 years with SpiceJet, where he served in several positions, including line training captain and senior commander.
He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and subsequently built extensive experience operating the Boeing 737. According to the source material, he has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience and approximately 9,750 flying hours.
His experience as a line training captain and senior commander contributed to his extensive operational background. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of professional experience, decision-making and cockpit discipline during aviation emergencies.
Defence Accounts Department to Celebrate 279th Annual Day
The Defence Accounts Department (DAD) will observe its 279th Annual Day on 1 October 2026 in New Delhi. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh is scheduled to attend the event at the Dr. D.S. Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan.
The Defence Accounts Department functions under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Its responsibilities include providing financial advice, processing payments, maintaining accounts and conducting internal audits for the Armed Forces and associated organisations.
Established in 1747, DAD is among India’s oldest government departments. Its headquarters is located in New Delhi.
The department is headed by the Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA) and is responsible for managing and controlling the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS).
Through its financial and audit functions, the department plays an important role in supporting the financial administration of India’s defence establishment.
Indian Coast Guard Intercepts Major Maritime Narcotics Smuggling Attempt
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), working jointly with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Gujarat, intercepted a major maritime narcotics-smuggling operation in the Arabian Sea on 25 September 2026.
The operation took place west of Lakshadweep and resulted in the seizure of approximately 526 kg of high-grade narcotic substances, including heroin and methamphetamine. Five Pakistani nationals allegedly operating the vessel were also apprehended.
The operation was launched after intelligence inputs indicated the movement of a suspected vessel. Indian Coast Guard assets carried out coordinated sea-and-air surveillance and persistent tracking before initiating a hot pursuit.
The suspected vessel, identified as an Iranian dhow, was intercepted and boarded in the high seas. Following the operation, the vessel, apprehended crew members and seized contraband were taken under armed security to Mumbai for joint interrogation and further investigation.
The operation involved multiple agencies and subsequent legal proceedings. According to the source, the seizure was valued at more than ₹3,000 crore and represents a significant effort against maritime narcotics trafficking.
ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise AIME-2026 Begins in the Philippines
The second edition of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2026) commenced at Subic Bay, Philippines, on 28 September 2026. The exercise brings together the Indian Navy and maritime forces from ASEAN member countries.
India is participating with INS Sahyadri and INS Kulish. The exercise is being conducted under the theme “Anchored in Trust, United at Sea.”
AIME-2026 is designed to promote greater understanding, cooperation and interoperability among participating maritime forces. Its activities include professional and operational engagements as well as social and cultural interactions.
The initial Harbour Phase includes Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, sports and cultural programmes, community engagement and operational synchronisation activities. A Pre-Sail Brief will be conducted before the forces move into the Sea Phase.
During the Sea Phase, participating maritime forces will conduct coordinated exercises and operational activities at sea. These activities are intended to improve professional understanding, operational coordination and interoperability through practical training.
India’s participation with INS Sahyadri and INS Kulish reflects the Indian Navy’s continued engagement with ASEAN maritime forces. The exercise also supports India’s Act East Policy and the MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
US to Complete Withdrawal of Remaining Troops from Iraq
The United States is scheduled to complete the withdrawal of its remaining military personnel from Iraq on 30 September 2026, ending a military deployment that began in 2014 as part of the international campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS).
The withdrawal brings the military component of Operation Inherent Resolve to an end and represents the second complete withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.
The latest departure follows an agreement reached between Baghdad and Washington in 2024. The plan was subsequently continued by the Trump administration, with the final withdrawal deadline remaining 30 September 2026.
American troops had previously withdrawn from Iraq in 2011, following an eight-year deployment that began after the 2003 invasion. They returned in 2014 after ISIS captured large areas of Iraq and Syria and posed a major threat to the Iraqi capital.
The US-led coalition played an important role in supporting Iraqi and Kurdish forces in their campaign against ISIS. Although ISIS lost its territorial control and was militarily defeated by 2019, coalition forces remained in the country to provide training, intelligence and operational assistance aimed at preventing the resurgence of extremist networks.
In the period leading up to the final withdrawal, US forces reduced their presence, particularly in northern Iraq around Erbil. Around 1,500 US and coalition personnel were reportedly still in Iraq shortly before the final departure, compared with approximately 2,500 American troops stationed there in recent years.
The withdrawal marks the conclusion of a major phase of US military involvement in Iraq that began with the 2003 invasion, resumed during the campaign against ISIS in 2014, and later evolved into a broader security partnership.
