Centre Formalises 28 Strategic Ladakh Locations on Official Map

The Government of India has formally incorporated 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh into the official Survey of India map following consultations with the Union Territory administration.

The initiative aims to bring greater uniformity to geographical names, improve the accuracy of official records and increase awareness of significant locations across Ladakh’s sensitive Himalayan frontier.

Among the locations included are Gogra and Hot Spring, which became prominent during the 2020 India-China military standoff in eastern Ladakh. Their strategic importance is linked to their proximity to Indian patrol routes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The border crisis began on May 5, 2020, following confrontations around Pangong Tso. The situation subsequently spread to several friction points across eastern Ladakh. Gogra and Hot Spring became important locations in the subsequent military-level negotiations between India and China.

Following prolonged diplomatic and military discussions, disengagement measures at several friction points began in 2022. These steps reduced immediate tensions, although wider boundary issues continued to remain unresolved.

The 28 newly recognised geographical features represent the varied terrain of Ladakh and include mountains, peaks, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes and land areas.

BrahMos Exports Expected to Cross $600 Million

India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile exports are projected to cross the $600 million mark, with export-related contracts and agreements involving the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The Philippines has already received BrahMos systems valued at around $330 million. Initial export arrangements involving Vietnam and Indonesia are estimated at approximately $100 million and $200 million, respectively.

BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile developed through an India-Russia joint venture. The missile system is available in land-based, sea-based and air-launched configurations. Its air-launched variant has also been integrated with Sukhoi fighter aircraft.

The Philippines became the first international customer for BrahMos in January 2022. It signed an agreement for a Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile System consisting of three batteries, marking the first overseas sale of the missile system.

The expansion of BrahMos exports comes amid the broader growth of India’s defence exports. India recorded its highest-ever defence exports of ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025–26, representing a 62.66% increase over ₹23,622 crore recorded in the previous financial year.

The three Southeast Asian countries associated with BrahMos exports—the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia—are located in maritime Southeast Asia, where anti-ship missile capabilities have relevance for coastal defence and sea-denial operations.

North Korea Test-Fires Ballistic Missile

North Korea has carried out another ballistic missile launch amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s military reported that the missile was fired towards the sea from the North Korean eastern coastal area near Wonsan.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile travelled more than 700 kilometres, while South Korean and US forces continued analysing the details of the launch. Japan’s Defence Ministry reported that the missile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Following the launch, South Korea increased surveillance and military vigilance against the possibility of additional weapons tests. Seoul also continued information-sharing with the United States and Japan.

The missile test occurred shortly after Kim Jong Un’s sister criticised South Korean calls for North Korea to apologise over landmine explosions reported on September 21. The blasts occurred close to the military demarcation line and injured three South Korean soldiers.

South Korea stated that a joint inspection involving the US-led United Nations Command concluded that the explosions were caused by mines planted by North Korea. The command subsequently determined that North Korea had violated the armistice agreement that brought an end to active fighting in the 1950–53 Korean War.

South Korea has also urged North Korea to stop its recent border fortification activities, including the deployment of mines and construction of anti-tank barriers. These activities have increased since Kim Jong Un announced in 2024 that South Korea would be regarded as a permanent adversary rather than pursuing the earlier policy of reconciliation.
