Exercise Mountain Guardian 2026: India-UAE Joint Military Exercise Begins in Uttarakhand
The India-UAE Joint Military Exercise MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 commenced at the Foreign Training Node, Chaubatia, Uttarakhand, on 5 October 2026. The exercise is scheduled to continue until 18 October 2026 and is primarily focused on improving cooperation and operational coordination between the two armies in mountain warfare.
A total of 92 military personnel, with equal participation from India and the United Arab Emirates, are taking part in the exercise. The Indian contingent consists of troops from a Bhairav Battalion, while the UAE contingent is drawn from a Mountain Infantry Battalion.
During the exercise, personnel from both sides will participate in a wide range of military activities. These include joint operational planning, tactical exercises, firing drills, surveillance-grid establishment, drone operations, physical endurance activities, rock climbing, obstacle training and integrated field exercises.
The exercise provides an important platform for the two forces to share operational experience and learn from each other’s procedures and practices. It is expected to improve tactical skills and strengthen interoperability during challenging mountain operations.
MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN 2026 also reflects the growing defence relationship between India and the UAE. Through joint training and professional interaction, the exercise aims to further strengthen military-to-military cooperation, mutual trust and friendship between the two countries.
HAL Koraput Marks Major Aerospace Milestone with Delivery of 2,000th Aero-Engine
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Koraput Division in Odisha, is set to achieve a significant milestone with the delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate the milestone event on 6 October 2026.
The achievement highlights the contribution of HAL Koraput to India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem and reflects nearly six decades of its role in supporting the operational preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces.
An important feature of the event will be the establishment of a second production line for Shakti engines, backed by an investment of ₹218 crore. The additional manufacturing capacity is intended to meet the increasing requirements of India’s indigenous helicopter programmes.
The enhanced production capability will support platforms such as the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter (LCH).
The development is also aligned with India’s broader objective of strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing. By expanding domestic design, development and production capabilities, India aims to reduce dependence on imports and increasingly position itself as a designer, developer and manufacturer of defence systems.
The 2,000th engine milestone therefore represents not only an achievement for HAL Koraput but also an important step in India’s continuing efforts towards defence self-reliance and indigenous aerospace production.
Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ship Programme Advances with Launch of FSS-1
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to launch Fleet Support Ship-1 (FSS-1) at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, on 6 October 2026. During the event, the keel of Fleet Support Ship-5 (FSS-5) will also be laid.
The programme will additionally witness the inauguration of the upgraded Slipway-4 and a 300-tonne Goliath Crane at HSL.
The modernised Slipway-4 has been strengthened through an extension in length and an increase in its load-bearing capacity. Together with the new Goliath Crane, the upgraded infrastructure will enable HSL to construct and launch vessels of up to 45,000 DWT, substantially increasing the shipyard’s ability to undertake larger and more complex naval platforms.
FSS-1 is the first of five Fleet Support Ships being constructed for the Indian Navy. The ship is expected to enter the Bay of Bengal just 18 months after the commencement of steel cutting, highlighting the pace of construction under the programme.
Each Fleet Support Ship will have a displacement of approximately 43,500 tonnes. These vessels are designed to provide essential logistical support to naval warships while they are operating at sea.
By enabling warships to replenish essential supplies without returning to port, Fleet Support Ships will help enhance the endurance, operational reach and sustained presence of the Indian Navy across the Indian Ocean Region.
The keel-laying ceremony for FSS-5 further demonstrates the transition of the programme towards series production and strengthens India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities.
DRDO Explores Airborne Laser Weapons to Counter Drone Threats
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is examining the possibility of equipping India’s ALH Dhruv and armed Rudra helicopters with laser-based directed-energy weapons. The proposed capability is aimed primarily at countering the growing threat posed by drones and other unmanned aerial systems.
The increasing use of unmanned platforms in modern conflicts has created new challenges for armed forces. Surveillance drones, loitering munitions and coordinated drone swarms can potentially overwhelm traditional air-defence systems, creating a need for faster and more precise countermeasures.
Under the concept being studied by DRDO, an airborne laser pod could be integrated with helicopters to provide them with a dedicated counter-drone capability. The proposed system would incorporate technologies such as thermal imaging sensors, a laser rangefinder and a precision beam-directing mechanism.
DRDO has already demonstrated a 30-kilowatt-class laser-directed energy weapon capable of engaging drones, unmanned aircraft and surveillance-related equipment.
The organisation is also working towards developing increasingly powerful directed-energy systems. While ground-based laser weapons can provide protection to fixed installations and strategic locations, integrating such systems with helicopters could provide an additional advantage through greater mobility and operational flexibility.
The proposed helicopter-based laser capability represents an effort to adapt directed-energy technology to the changing nature of warfare. It could potentially provide military forces with a mobile means of responding to emerging aerial threats, particularly those involving unmanned systems.
India Achieves Breakthrough in Quantum-Secure Communication with 5.56-km QKD Link
India has achieved an important milestone in quantum-secure communications by successfully demonstrating a 5.56-kilometre free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar.
The field demonstration was conducted during the night of 27–28 September by QNu Labs, in collaboration with BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar.
The trial successfully transmitted quantum-encoded light over a 5.56-kilometre atmospheric path, demonstrating that quantum-secure communication can function over several kilometres under real-world conditions.
A key performance parameter recorded during the demonstration was a Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) below 5%. The system also generated secret encryption keys at approximately 230–260 bits per second. According to the information provided, this was sufficient to generate material corresponding to approximately one new AES-256 encryption key every second.
Another important component was the Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) system developed by QNu Labs. The system continuously maintained the precise alignment of the narrow optical beam throughout the 5.56-kilometre link despite atmospheric disturbances.
The experiment is significant because free-space QKD demonstrations allow researchers to study the challenges associated with atmospheric quantum communication, including turbulence, dust, background noise and high-precision optical tracking.
Such trials can serve as an important technological foundation for future space-based quantum communication networks. Testing these technologies through terrestrial atmospheric links provides an opportunity to address practical challenges before attempting similar communication systems in orbit.
The successful demonstration therefore represents a significant step in India’s development of technologies for secure quantum communications and future quantum networks.
