Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani is expected to make an announcement on a possible two-year service extension for Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme. According to senior government officials cited in the report, the move reflects the military’s assessment of their contribution and the need to keep them in service for a longer period. At present, however, official confirmation has not been issued.
What the reported extension may mean
If implemented, the extension could apply to more than 18,300 Agniveers from the first batch, who were earlier due to complete their four-year engagement and leave the armed forces by 31 December 2026. This first batch forms roughly three-fourths of the nearly 24,400 recruits enrolled across the Army, Indian Air Force and Navy. The reported numbers include about 19,000 Agniveers in the Army, 2,850 in the Indian Air Force and 2,550 in the Navy.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced in June 2022, recruits personnel for a fixed four-year period. Under the current arrangement, up to 25 per cent may be retained for regular service for another 15 years, while the remaining 75 per cent are released. The proposed extension would allow eligible Agniveers who choose to continue to remain in uniform for an additional two years, with officials saying that the decision would rest with the individual.
Timing of the expected announcement
The announcement is expected before the three services begin phased release of the first batch from mid-November. As per the report, the Navy’s first cohort is scheduled to complete service on 21 November, followed by the Indian Air Force on 21 December and the Army on 31 December. Some reports have described the extra period as a “second tour of duty.”
The three services have reportedly expressed satisfaction with the performance of Agniveers in different roles. Earlier discussions had suggested that the scheme could be modified in the future to retain more personnel with specialised skills. The present development comes as the first major exit under the recruitment model approaches, with the scheme intended to keep the force younger and more combat-ready.
As of the latest available information, there is still no formal notification from the government or the Ministry of Defence. Further details on eligibility, service-wise numbers and the terms of the extension are expected once General N.S. Raja Subramani makes the announcement.
