The government has introduced a provision allowing Agniveers to extend their service by two additional years, along with an opportunity to be considered for permanent enrolment in the Armed Forces. The move is aimed at retaining trained personnel and providing greater continuity in military service.
Two-Year Extension for Agniveers and Opportunity To Join The Regular Armed Forces
Key Features of the Revised Agnipath Arrangement
According to the decision approved by the Union Cabinet on 4 November 2026, the revised arrangement will apply to the 75 per cent of Agniveers who are not selected for regular enrolment after their initial four-year tenure.
The major provisions are:
- Additional Service: The remaining 75 per cent of Agniveers will be offered a further two-year engagement period after completing their initial four years.
- Opportunity for Regular Enrolment: After the extended period, Agniveers will have another opportunity to join the Armed Forces as regular personnel.
- Selection Conditions: Enrolment will depend on the individual’s willingness and fulfilment of the prescribed objective selection criteria.
- Improved Financial Benefits: Agniveers opting for the additional two years will receive enhanced salaries. Those choosing to leave after the extended period will also receive an increased Seva Nidhi package.

Background: The Agnipath Scheme
The Agnipath recruitment scheme was introduced by the Government of India in June 2022 to recruit young personnel into the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Under the original framework:
- Agniveers were recruited for a four-year service period.
- Up to 25 per cent of each batch could be retained in the regular cadre, based on merit and organisational requirements.
- The remaining 75 per cent were expected to leave the Armed Forces after completing their four-year engagement.
The revised provision introduces an additional stage of service and selection, giving Agniveers who are not initially retained more time and another opportunity to pursue a long-term military career.

Reason Behind the Decision
Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani stated that the decision followed continuous assessments of Agniveers’ performance over the past four years.
The extension is expected to help the Armed Forces retain trained and experienced personnel while maintaining a youthful profile. It also provides additional time for Agniveers to demonstrate their capabilities and qualify for regular enrolment.
Significance
The revised arrangement represents an important development in the implementation of the Agnipath scheme. It provides greater career continuity to Agniveers, recognises their experience and offers another route towards permanent service in the Armed Forces.
The first batches are beginning to complete their four-year engagement period in November 2026, making the decision particularly significant for the future of the scheme. India News – The Indian Express+1
Important for exam preparation: The central point is that the additional two-year engagement is being offered to the 75 per cent who are not initially absorbed. A further opportunity for regular enrolment follows the extended period, subject to willingness and the prescribed selection criteria.
