27 Asst.Commandants of the 72nd & 73rd Batch passed out of the portals of Indian Coast Guard Training Centre, Kochi on completion of CG Law & Ops Course. The Passing Out Parade was reviewed by IG Dinesh Rajaputhran, TM, Cdr Coast Guard Region(A&N).
During the course, the officers have imparted instructions on Coast Guard specific subjects such as Maritime Law, Search & Rescue, Boarding Ops, Fisheries Monitoring & Control, Prevention & Control of Marine Pollution & other subjects related to the Coast Guard Charter of Duties.
All About Indian Coast Guard
The Indian Coast Guard is a multi-mission organization, conducting round-the-year real-life operations at sea. Despite being relatively small, it has a wide range of task capabilities for both surface and air operations.
The organization is headed by the Director General Indian Coast Guard (DGICG) exercising his overall command and superintendence from the Coast Guard Headquarters (CGHQ) located at New Delhi. At CGHQ, he is assisted by four Deputy Director Generals of the rank of Inspector General, and other senior officers heading various staff divisions.
For effective command and control, the Maritime Zones of India are divided into five Coast Guard Regions, namely, North-West, West, East, North-East and Andaman & Nicobar, with the respective Regional Headquarters located at Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Port Blair. The Coast Guard Regions are commanded by Officers of the rank of Inspector General.
The regions are further divided into twelve Coast Guard ‘Districts’, one each for the nine coastal states on the mainland, two in the Andaman & Nicobar Region, and one at Kavaratti in the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands. Each Coast Guard District comprises of one or more Coast Guard Stations. In addition, there are Coast Guard Air Stations (CGAS) and Air Enclaves (CGAE) for air operations from various locations along the coastline.
Indian Coast Guard Charter of Duties
Safety of Life and Property at Sea: Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft operations mitigate the effect of maritime accidents, and help in ensuring safety and security from natural or man-made disasters.
Assisting the Customs and other authorities in anti-smuggling operations: The Indian Coast Guard, in coordination with the Customs and other enforcement agencies, undertakes operations to prevent ingress and egress of contraband, and other items on the banned list.
Prevention and Control of Marine Pollution: The Indian Coast Guard conducts regular training for all stakeholders and oil agencies, and continuously validates various contingency plans to prevent environmental damage in case of marine oil-spills. It has developed the capability to be the “first-responder” for oil-spills in Indian waters.
How To Join Indian Coast Guard as Officer in ICG
To ensure that quality resource is available to the Coast Guard, the benchmark for the selection of officer is set high, right from the screening stage. The selection process is stringent and ensures that only the most suitable candidates are inducted into the service. The Indian Coast Guard Recruitment setup is responsible for the selection and recruitment of all uniformed entries into the Indian Coast Guard. The organization is headquartered in Sector 62, NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh and works closely with Human Resource Department (HRD) at CGHQ as well as all the stakeholders at Regional Headquarters (RHQs). Directorate of Recruitment specifically looks at recruitment of the Enrolled Personnel (EPs) and selection of Officers into the Coast Guard and is headed by Principal Director (Recruitment). Coast Guard Selection Board (CGSB) is headed by the Deputy Director General (DDG) and is responsible for conduct of testing of candidates for the selection of Officers for service in the Coast Guard. Directorate of Recruitment and CGSB follows the philosophy of selecting the best suited manpower for the Coast Guard while ensuring diversity, equal opportunity and security cum secrecy during the process of selection and recruitment.
