The Home of New MRSAM Missiles

Defence spokesperson Mahendra Rawat stated that the Regiment has been outfitted with the MRSAM Weapon System, which was developed in-house by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The MRSAM weapon system, also known as the ‘Abhra’ Weapon System, is a cutting-edge medium-range air defence weapon system developed in collaboration with DRDO and Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI), with active participation from Indian public and private defence industry partners, including MSMEs.

Lt Gen RP Kalita GOC-in-C, Eastern Command during the first visit to MRSAM Regiment highlighted that with such a giant leap towards indigenisation in the defence sector, India will soon become self-reliant in defence manufacturing in line with the national aim of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

Rawat stated that it provides air defence against a wide range of aerial targets such as fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, and subsonic and supersonic missiles, and is capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously with an indigenously developed state-of-the-art system.

About Surface-to-Air Missiles

A surface-to-air missile (SAM), often referred to as a ground-to-air missile (GTAM) or surface-to-air guided weapon (SAGW), is a missile that is made to be fired from the ground in order to take out aircraft or other missiles. It is a particular kind of anti-aircraft system; in today’s armed forces, missiles have mostly superseded other types of specifically designed anti-aircraft weapons, with anti-aircraft guns being relegated to specialised functions.

Medium-Range SAMs

Medium-range designs are made to be extremely movable and need little to no setup time. Many of these designs could keep up with mobile operations in a conventional battle because they were mounted atop armoured vehicles. Medium-range designs, formerly a significant group unto itself, have undergone less development since the 1990s as the emphasis has shifted to unconventional warfare.
