According to army authorities, Indian Army men will now study Chinese at the Tezpur University in Assam, where an MoU was inked on Wednesday. A Chinese language training, according to defence spokesman Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat, would enhance army personnel’s Mandarin proficiency and equip them to communicate with Chinese counterparts as and when circumstances call for it.
Army Personnel to learn Chinese
He claimed that the army soldiers would be better able to make their ideas in a far more convincing way with increased Chinese language abilities. Additionally, it will facilitate a better flow of ideas and comprehension of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) account of its operations during a variety of contacts, such as commander-level discussions, flag meetings, joint exercises, and border personnel meetings.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the training of Indian Army personnel in the Chinese language was inked on Wednesday, according to Rawat, between the Indian Army and Tezpur University. The course will last for 16 weeks in total. A parliamentary act created Tezpur University in 1994 as a central university. It is a pioneer in the teaching of foreign languages, notably Chinese, in the northeast.
India-China Tawang Clash
On December 9, 2023, soldiers from the Indian and Chinese armed forces engaged in combat along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang region of Arunachal Pradesh. The number of soldiers engaged in the confrontation and those hurt during the incident were not disclosed by the Army. However, according to many media sources, there were more than 200 Chinese soldiers present, who were armed with spiked clubs and rods, and the number of casualties sustained by the Chinese side may be greater.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in a statement to Parliament that the Indian Army valiantly prevented Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops from invading Indian territory and forced them to retreat to their stations. The fighting in Tawang was the first bloody altercation since Indian and Chinese troops engaged in a hand-to-hand battle in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, next to the Chinese-held Tibetan plateau, in June 2020. Following the severe confrontation in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which was the most significant military conflict between the two countries in decades, relations between India and China have taken a sharp turn for the worst.
