Pakistan Navy on 10th May announced that the delivery of Advanced Frigates from China was made successful. The Pakistani Navy successfully brought the frigates from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, China. Two newly-built Type 054 A/P frigates, officially named “Tippu Sultan” and “Shah Jahan,” have officially joined the Pakistan Navy and are now in service.

Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi, Chief of Naval Staff of the Pakistan Navy, attended the ceremony as the chief guest and handed over the traditional command orders to the commanders of the Pakistan Navy vessels. In his remarks, Admiral Niazi emphasized that the commissioning of the frigates “Tippu Sultan” and “Shah Jahan” signals the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan-China relations. This friendship has grown and is firmly based on trust, respect, and mutual support, as seen by the two countries’ defence collaboration. Admiral Niazi went on to say that, with China’s active backing, the Pakistan Navy had taken significant steps to strengthen its naval force structure and consistently improve its operational capabilities. Completing the Type 054 A/P project is a significant step towards improving the region’s ability to confront maritime threats and contribute to peace and stability. Finally, Admiral Niazi expressed gratitude and praise for the combined efforts of all parties engaged in the development of the naval boats, recognizing the project’s prompt completion despite the hurdles faced by the epidemic.

Contract of 4 Navy Vessels with China

Pakistan and China signed a contract in 2018 for four multi-purpose frigates (Type 054 A/P). The Pakistan Navy’s first two ships, “Tughril” and “Taimur,” entered the navy in 2022. These advanced naval vessels created for the Pakistan Navy are based on modern stealth designs and are capable of carrying out several naval combat operations to fight maritime threats at the same time. These 4,000-ton frigates are technologically advanced vessels with strong ship-to-ship, ground attack, ship-to-air, and underwater firepower capabilities, as well as significant combat information-collecting capabilities. The ceremony also included high-ranking civilian and military leaders, including Pakistan’s Ambassador to China and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard authorities.

The Type 54 A/P frigate is China’s largest and most modern surface combat vessel. Other important naval projects and ongoing collaborations between the two nations include the F-22P frigates with Z-9 helicopters, the survey vessel PNS Behr Masah, Azmat-class rapid attack craft (missile), and Hangor-class submarines.
