On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi will attend the Quad Leaders Summit in Japan, followed by a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Senior Indian and Ukrainian diplomats are discussing the potential of a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Hiroshima.

G-7 Meet in Japan

PM Modi left for Tokyo yesterday to attend three sessions at the G7 meeting as part of his three-nation visit, which also includes stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia. In addition to attending the summit, PM Modi will undertake a series of bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Accordingly, both sides are engaged in discussions to finalise the proposal. The Ukrainian president has accepted an offer from Japan, the current chair of the influential organisation. Emine Dzhaparova, Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister, visited India last month, marking the country’s first high-level visit to India since the crisis began in the eastern European country. During her visit, Ms Dzhaparova handed over a letter to Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs. President Zelenskyy wrote the letter to PM Modi.

PM Modi has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as President Zelenskyy several times since the Ukraine war began. On October 4, last year, PM Modi told President Zelenskyy by phone that there can be “no military solution” and that India is willing to participate in any peace efforts. India has insisted that the problem be settled through diplomacy and negotiation.
