PM Modi raises India’s concerns on LAC standoff with Xi Jinping                            

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed to Chinese President Xi Jinping India’s concerns on the “unresolved” issues along Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh during a conversation on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said.
  • The prime minister underlined that maintenance of peace and tranquillity in border areas and observing and respecting the LAC are essential for normalisation of India-China relations, he said at a media briefing.
  • Kwatra said Modi had conversations with BRICS leaders on the sidelines of the summit of the grouping in Johannesburg.
  • The ties between India and China came under severe strain following the eastern Ladakh border standoff that began in May, 2020.

India, Japan hold Deputy NSA Strategic Dialogue, Discuss Defence, Economic Security                

  • India and Japan held the second Deputy NSA Strategic Dialogue on Thursday and discussed enhancing cooperation in defence and economic security.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by India’s Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Vikram Misri and Japan’s Deputy Secretary General Keiichi Ichikawa.
  • In the meeting, representatives of both countries embraced enhancing cooperation in defence, economic security and critical & and emerging technology and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
  • Earlier on August 23, Vikram Misri, Deputy National Security Adviser visited South Korea from August 22 to 23 for the fourth India-RoK Deputy NSA level Strategic Dialogue.
  • Deputy NSA Misri met the first Deputy Director of National Security, Kim Tae-hyo. They discussed enhancing cooperation in a wide range of bilateral areas including defence industry and technology, economic security and supply chain resilience, enhancing Korean investments in India, and science and technology issues.

Internal Security, Terrorism, Cyber Security Discussed At High-level Meet Chaired By Amit Shah            

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasised upon the crucial role of district level police officers in managing internal security. Shah was chairing twoday National Security Strategies Conference-2023 with a theme of ensuring a safe and secure nation by strengthening all aspects of national security mechanism.
  • A total of more than 750 participants, including officers working in the field and subject experts, joined the conference from across the country, in a combination of physical and virtual modes.
  • Home minister reiterated the government’s commitment to tackle the menace of drug trafficking, besides other issues relating to security of the citizens and India. Shah would be addressing the concluding session of the conference.

Air Force Set To Order 100 More Indigenous LCA Mk1A Fighter Jets  

  • In a major show of confidence for the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), the air force is set to order an additional 100 of the Mk 1A variant of the fighter jet, with the order value likely to be around $8 billion.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already placed an order for 83 LCA Mk1A fighter jets, the first of which is to be delivered by early next year.
  • The officials further added that the proposals for the projects have been submitted to the Defence Ministry and clearance for the order is expected in the near future.
  • As many as 300 Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets are going to be inducted into the Indian Air Force in the next few years.

Russia thwarts Ukrainian Attack on Crimea Involving 42 Drones   

  • Moscow said on Friday its forces had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to attack Russia-annexed Crimea with 42 drones overnight.
  • “Nine UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were destroyed… over the territory of the Republic of Crimea. 33 UAVs were suppressed by electronic warfare and crashed without reaching the target,” Russia’s defence ministry.
  • Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, has been targeted by Kyiv throughout Moscow’s Ukraine offensive but has come under more intense, increased attacks in recent weeks.
  • Kyiv has repeatedly said it plans to take Crimea back.
  • On Thursday, Ukraine said its forces had flown the country’s flag in Russian-annexed Crimea during a “special operation” to mark its second wartime Independence Day.
  • On Wednesday, Kyiv said it destroyed a powerful Russian S-400 anti-aircraft system in the area, which it said inflicted a “painful blow” on enemy air defences.
