What Is The Agnipath Scheme?

  • The Agnipath Entry Scheme, A Proposal By The Central Government, Is A New Name Given To The “Tour Of Duty” Entry Scheme.

  • Discussions On The Tour Of Duty Scheme Started 2 Years Ago. The Scheme Comes At A Time When There Are 1.25 Lakh Vacancies In The Defence Forces And The Recruitment Of Soldiers In The Armed Forces Has Been Halted Since The Last 2 Years Due To COVID-19 Pandemic.

How Does The Agnipath Scheme Work?

  • Candidates Must Be Between 18 And 24 Years To Apply For The Scheme. They Will Have To Qualify Physical Efficiency Test. Educational Requirements Will Be The Same As That Of The Indian Army.
  • After Completion Of The Three-year Stint, The Defence Forces May Retain, Around 20-25% Of Best Agniveers For Longer Tenures While Releasing The Others For Civilian Jobs.
  • Those Who Get Relieved From Duty Will Be Aided In Getting Placed In Civilian Jobs. Several Corporate Houses Have Shown Interest In Recruiting These Military-Trained Agniveers.

Current Status Of Agnipath Scheme Recruitments:

  • If The Project Moves As Per Plan, The Recruitment Process For The First Batch Of Agniveers May Start In The Next Three To Four Months. The Forces Will Also Have The Option Of Recruiting Specialists For Specific Tasks Who Would Perform The Desired Role.

Cons Of The Agnipath Scheme:

  • The Scheme Is Yet To Be Implemented, However, It Will Certainly Have Some Ripples. India Has A Massive Pool Of Unemployed Youths And The Scheme Can Attract People, Who Do Not Want To Join The Army But Are Desperately Looking For A Job.
  • There Is A High Possibility Of Agniveers Losing Motivation In Work Due To Insecurities Of Being Jobless After Three Years.
