Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti has officially taken on the role of Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (DCAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF), marking a significant milestone in his nearly four-decade career of distinguished service. This new position, effective from June 1, 2025, comes at a critical time for the IAF as it navigates complex regional security dynamics.
Before this elevation, Air Marshal Bharti served as the Director General of Air Operations, where he was instrumental in modernizing the IAF’s combat readiness. His leadership during key aerial campaigns, particularly Operation Sindoor, showcased India’s growing aerospace capabilities and highlighted the evolving strategic doctrine within the force. His tenure was marked by significant advancements in combat preparedness, demonstrating his ability to drive progress in a rapidly changing operational environment.
Originating from Jhunni Kala village in Bihar’s Purnia district, Bharti’s military journey started at Sainik School Tilaiya. He then progressed through the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, culminating in his commissioning as a fighter pilot on June 13, 1987, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour. Throughout his career, he commanded several frontline squadrons, including No. 24 and No. 30, achieving a remarkable safety record and receiving multiple commendations from the Chief of Air Staff for his professionalism and leadership.
In his new role as DCAS, Air Marshal Bharti will play a pivotal part in strategic planning and resource optimization at Air Headquarters in New Delhi. He will report directly to the Chief of the Air Staff, focusing on enhancing the modernization roadmap of the IAF while adapting to shifts in regional security challenges.
Bharti succeeds Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, who held the position until April 30, 2025. In parallel, Air Marshal George Thomas has been appointed the new Director General of Air Operations, taking over from Bharti.
Air Marshal Bharti’s appointment underscores the IAF’s commitment to maintaining a future-ready air force led by a seasoned leader known for his tactical brilliance and operational acumen. His extensive experience in aerial warfare and strategic leadership is expected to contribute significantly to the air force’s ongoing evolution and modernization efforts.
