Airbus Delivers First Two NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters to Spanish Navy

Airbus Helicopters has successfully delivered the first two NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters (MSPT) to the Spanish Navy, marking a significant milestone in Spain’s defense capabilities. These helicopters are part of a larger order of seven units, which falls under the second phase of the country’s NH90 program, intended to expand its fleet to a total of 23 aircraft.

The MSPT variant has been specifically designed for amphibious tactical missions. Notable features include reinforced landing gear to accommodate various terrains, advanced naval communication and navigation systems, as well as an automatic folding mechanism for both the main rotor and tail, enhancing operational efficiency and deployment flexibility. This helicopter can transport up to 20 fully equipped troops or a light vehicle, making it an asset for rapid deployment. Additionally, the MSPT supports single-pilot operations, even in low-visibility conditions, which is crucial for complex military operations.

With the arrival of these helicopters, the NH90 is now operational across all three branches of the Spanish Armed Forces, namely the Army, Air and Space Force, and Navy. This integration reflects a comprehensive approach to modernizing and enhancing the capabilities of Spain’s military fleet.

The delivery coincides with an agreement signed in May between the Spanish government and Airbus under the National Helicopter Plan, aimed at bolstering Spain’s NH90 fleet. With a maximum cruising speed of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour and an impressive endurance of up to five hours on standard fuel tanks, the NH90 is well-equipped for extended mission profiles.

In terms of specifications, the helicopter measures 19.56 meters (64.2 feet) in length, 16.3 meters (53.5 feet) in width, and stands at a height of 5.3 meters (17.4 feet). Its empty weight is approximately 6,400 kilograms (14,110 pounds), with a maximum gross weight reaching 10,600 kilograms (23,370 pounds).

The introduction of these helicopters is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Spanish Navy, ensuring they are well-prepared for a range of missions in diverse environments.
