The French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) has entered into a significant agreement with Airbus Defence and Space for the development of a crucial communications network intended for the surface and underwater fleets of the French Armed Forces. This ambitious project, valued at 480 million euros (approximately $502.7 million), aims to enhance the operational capabilities of more than 80 vessels over a span from 2028 to 2032.
The scope of the contract encompasses a wide variety of naval vessels, including fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft carriers, frigates, submarines, minesweepers, patrol boats, command and supply vessels, as well as support ships. This diverse array demonstrates the extensive reach and critical importance of the new communications network for the French naval forces.
Airbus is set to commence its responsibilities under this initiative in 2026, collaborating with naval industry leader Naval Group. The agreement has the potential to extend for a decade if all options are utilized, indicating a long-term commitment to upgrading the naval communications infrastructure.
A key objective of this project is the modernization of the Internet Protocol Network for the Naval Force, known as RIFAN. The forthcoming RIFAN 3 system will function as the third iteration of the network, succeeding RIFAN 2, which has been in operation since its activation in 2012. The current system plays a vital role in integrating onboard capabilities, radio resources, and commercial satellite systems that support the operational activities of the fleet.
Airbus highlights that RIFAN 3 will significantly enhance inter-ship connectivity, aligning with the evolving demands of collaborative combat operations.
