Algeria Becomes First Export Customer for Russia's Su-57 Stealth Fighter Jet

Algeria has emerged as the first international customer for Russia’s advanced Su-57 stealth fighter jet, as announced by the North African nation’s state media. Reports indicate that Algerian pilots are currently undertaking training in Russia, while the delivery of the aircraft is expected to occur within this year. However, specifics regarding the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

This announcement aligns with comments made by Alexander Mikheev, the CEO of the state-owned defense company Rosoboronexport, during the Aero India 2025 exhibition. Mikheev stated, “The first foreign customer of the promising fifth-generation multirole fighter Su-57E will begin operating this aircraft, which will be supplied by Rosoboronexport, in 2025.” Despite the anticipation surrounding the fighter jet, the identities of specific customers were not revealed at that time.

Russia has maintained a longstanding military partnership with Algeria, dating back to the 1960s, making it the largest military supplier to the country. This relationship has been reinforced by mutual agreements to enhance their military cooperation, particularly in 2023.

The Su-57, also known by its NATO designation “Felon,” was designed to engage aerial and surface targets effectively. The aircraft’s export variant, the Su-57E, is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 1,350 kilometers per hour (838 miles per hour) at low altitudes. The Su-57 features a service ceiling of 18.8 kilometers (11.6 miles) and a combat radius of 1,250 kilometers (776 miles).

Developed to compete with advanced U.S. fighter aircraft such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, the Su-57 prototype first took to the skies in January 2010. However, the program has faced challenges, including sluggish production rates and export negotiations. The withdrawal of India from the program in 2018, attributed to disagreements over technology sharing and cost management, further complicated matters. Additionally, a crash in 2019 and resultant sanctions following Russia’s military actions in Ukraine have contributed to significant delays in the program’s progress.

With Algeria stepping forward as the first buyer, the Su-57’s journey from a promising prototype to an operational fighter jet is poised for a crucial test in the Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape.
