Indian Navy Exercises 2023

Exercise SIMBEX 23

INS Ranvijay and Kavaratti and submarine INS Sindhukesari arrived in Singapore to participate in the 30th edition of the SIMBEX, an annual bilateral Naval exercise between the Indian Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy, which is being conducted since 1994. Exercise conducted in two phases Harbour Phase at Singapore from 21 to 24 September 2023, followed by a Sea Phase. Besides Ranvijay, Kavaratti and Sindhukesari, Long-Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I is also participated in the exercise.

The Harbour Phase witnessed a wide range of professional interactions, cross-deck visits, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and sports fixtures, aimed at enhancing interoperability and mutual understanding between the two navies.

Exercise Prasthan In Andhra’s Kakinada

Under the aegis of Eastern Naval Command, the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Andhra Pradesh conducted Exercise Prasthan 2023 for security of offshore development area in Kakinada. As per a Navy statement, the exercise was conducted on the Rig ship Platinum Explorer of ONGC and RG Fixed Oil Platform of Vedanta Ltd. The exercise was aimed at rehearsing responses in handling contingencies and checking the efficacy of security mechanisms at ODA.

EX-KAVACH 2023

Andaman & Nicobar Command conducted a Large-scale Joint military EX-KAVACH involving assets of the Army, Navy, Air Force & Coast Guard on April 5. During the military exercise, naval warships, Army amphibious troops, and various types of Indian Air Force aircraft were used. The drill also included the airborne deployment of marine commandos from the Navy and para commandos from the Indian Army, as well as naval gunfire support, amphibious landing forces, and follow-up operations.

Exercise Zayed-Talwar 2023

The two ships visited Port Rashid from August 8 to August 11 and led by Captain Ashok Rao and Captain Pramod G Thomas, respectively, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence. INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand under the command of Rear Admiral Vineet McCarty, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet arrived at Port Rashid in Dubai to conduct bilateral exercise ‘Zayed Talwar’ to enhance interoperability and synergy between the two navies. “During the visit, the ships engaged in professional interactions with the UAE Naval Force on a variety of maritime operations,” the statement said. They also discussed best practices in order to increase collaboration and ties between the two navies. Furthermore, according to the release, this visit strengthen the two navies’ maritime collaboration and promote shared knowledge of the region’s security problems. The ships arrived in Dubai with the intention of engaging in constructive engagement and nautical cooperation with regional countries.

Exercise Samudra Shakti – 23

INS Kavaratti, indigenously designed & built ASW Corvette, arrived at Batam, Indonesia participated in the 4th edition of India-Indonesia Bilateral exercise Samudra Shakti-23 from 14-19 May 23. An Indian Navy’s Dornier Maritime Patrol aircraft and Chetak helicopter participated. The Indonesian Navy represented by KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda, CN 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and AS565 Panther Helicopter. Exercise Samudra Shakti is aimed at enhancing interoperability, jointness and mutual cooperation between both the navies.

Exercise ‘Ekatha’ 2023

Indian Navy divers and Marine Commandos are in the Maldives for the 6th edition of Exercise Ekatha with Maldives National Defence Force from 4th June to 3rd July. Exercise taken part by 30 marines of MNDF Marine Corps, Special Operations Group and 10 marine commandos from the Indian Navy focused on combat shoot, VBSS, demolition, CQB, divator diving, rebreather diving, and diving operations. The annual exercise is conducted between the two forces to enhance interoperability in diving and special operations.

EXERCISE CUTLASS EXPRESS 23

INS Trikand participated in the International Maritime Exercise/ Cutlass Express 2023 (IMX/CE-23) being held in the Gulf region from 26 Feb to 16 Mar 23. She exercised with participants from over 50 nations and international maritime agencies with the common aim of enhancing maritime security and keeping sea lanes in the region safe for maritime commerce. IMX/CE-23 is one of the largest multinational maritime exercises in the world. While this is Indian Navy’s maiden IMX participation, it also marks the second occasion where an Indian Naval ship is participating in an exercise conducted by the CMF.

The multinational exercise groups together forces from Eastern Africa, Europe and North America, and is conducted by the U.S Naval Forces Africa (Navaf) with the sponsorship of the U.S Africa Command (Africom).

Exercise AMPHEX 2023

The largest biennial Tri-Services amphibious exercise – AMPHEX 2023 – involving the Indian Army, IAF, and the Indian Navy, was conducted near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh from January 17 to January 22. The joint operations conducted during the exercise saw the participation of a large number of troops from the Indian Army, amphibious warships from the Indian Navy, and aircraft from the IAF.

Exercise ‘Al-Mohed-Al Hindi-23’

The sea phase of second edition of bilateral exercise ‘Al Mohed Al Hindi 23’, between Indian Navy and Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF) was held from 23 – 25 May 23 off Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. INS Tarkash, INS Subhadra and Dornier Maritime Patrol aircraft (MPA) participated in the exercise from the Indian side. The RSNF was represented by HMS Badr and Abdul Aziz, MH 60R helo and UAV.

The three-day exercise at sea witnessed a wide spectrum of maritime operations. The exercise culminated with debrief at sea followed by traditional steam past. The successful conduct of ‘Al Mohed Al Hindi 23’ showcased high degree of professionalism, interoperability and exchanges of best practices between the two navies. The bilateral exercise met all its objectives and both sides intend to graduate to more advanced level of exercises in the next edition.

EXERCISE – SALVEX 2023

The Seventh edition of Indian Navy – US Navy (IN – USN) Salvage and Explosive Ordnance Disposal exercise, SALVEX was conducted from 26 Jun – 06 Jul 23 at Kochi. IN and USN have been participating in joint Salvage and EOD exercises since 2005. The exercise saw participation from both the navies which included the ships – INS Nireekshak and USNS Salvor in addition to Specialist Diving and EOD teams.

Ex Varuna 2023

The 21st Edition of the Bilateral Naval Exercise b/w India and France – Exercise Varuna commenced on the Western Seaboard in the Arabian Sea on 16 Jan 23. Phase Il of the 21st edition of Varuna (Varuna-23) bilateral exercise between Indian and French Navy was conducted in the Arabian Sea. The exercise witnessed participation of guided missile frigates, tanker, Maritime Patrol Aircraft and integral helicopters from the two sides. The exercise was conducted over three days and witnessed joint operations, underway replenishment and various tactical manoeuvres. Units of both navies endeavoured to enhance and hone their war fighting skills, improve interoperability and demonstrate their ability to promote, peace, security and stability in the region.

While the bilateral exercise b/w the two navies was initiated in 1993, it was christened as ‘VARUNA’ in 2001 and has become a hallmark of India – France strategic bilateral relationship.
