Father Served in BSF, Son Is Army Major, Daughter Now Navy Officer

What began as a family story shaped by service, loss and perseverance has now added a new uniform to its legacy. Sub Lieutenant Garima Singh from Bhawani Nagar, Tiloi, in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on October 23, 2026, marking a major milestone for a household already closely associated with the armed and border security services.

Garima’s commissioning means that two siblings from the same family are now serving as commissioned officers in different branches of the Indian Armed Forces. Her elder brother, Major Kumar Vikram Singh, is already serving in the Indian Army, while their late father, Shri Hari Shankar Singh, had served in the Border Security Force (BSF).

A family legacy shaped by service and sacrifice

The achievement carries emotional weight because Shri Hari Shankar Singh died in 2020. His service in the BSF had already set a strong example of duty, but he was not present to witness the commissioning of either of his children.

After his death, the family’s mother, who is a homemaker, became the main source of support for Garima and her brother. Her role, as described in the report, was central to helping both children continue pursuing their ambitions despite personal hardship.

For a family of only two siblings, both reaching the rank of commissioned officers is a significant moment. It reflects years of effort, resilience and the quiet sacrifices made within the household.

From a TCS career to the Indian Navy

Garima’s route to the Navy also stands out because she moved from civilian employment into military service. She is a Computer Science engineering graduate and had been working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) before deciding to join the Armed Forces.

She entered the Indian Navy through the Short Service Commission (SSC) Information Technology entry. In this context, the route is a specialised commissioning pathway for qualified technology professionals to serve in the Navy.

Her training began at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Kerala, and later continued at INS Valsura, one of the Navy’s important training establishments. The journey ended with her commissioning on October 23, 2026, as Sub Lieutenant Garima Singh.

Her career shift also shows that a uniformed service pathway is not confined to those who prepare for it immediately after school. With the right qualifications and determination, professionals from other fields can also enter the Armed Forces.

Two officers, one family, three services

For Major Kumar Vikram Singh, his sister’s commissioning is a moment of pride within the family. He is already serving as an officer in the Indian Army, and Garima’s entry into the Navy adds another chapter to the family’s connection with national service.

Seen together, the family’s story now spans three uniformed services: the BSF, the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. Although the responsibilities in each organisation differ, the common thread is service to the country.

According to the family’s account shared with SSBCrack, the occasion is especially meaningful because it comes after their father’s death in 2020 and their mother’s efforts to support both children through their journeys.

An encouraging example for young aspirants

Garima Singh’s story is likely to resonate with many young women, especially those from smaller towns and rural backgrounds who aspire to join the Armed Forces. Coming from Amethi, earning an engineering degree, working in the private sector and then securing a commission in the Navy, she has shown that background does not have to limit opportunity.

Her path also points to the variety of roles available in the Indian Navy beyond traditional combat appointments. As technology becomes increasingly important, specialised entries such as the SSC Information Technology route create space for trained professionals to contribute in technical fields.

For defence aspirants, especially women, her journey underlines the value of preparation, discipline and the courage to make difficult career choices. It also highlights how family support can shape a person’s ability to pursue demanding goals.

A legacy carried forward

The most moving part of this story is the sense of continuity it represents. Shri Hari Shankar Singh served the nation through the BSF, but did not live to see his daughter’s commissioning. Six years after his death, both of his children are now serving as officers, extending the family’s association with uniformed service.

With Major Kumar Vikram Singh in the Army and Sub Lieutenant Garima Singh in the Navy, the Singh family’s journey reflects loss as well as resilience. Their story is one of duty, sacrifice and determination carried forward across generations.

Garima Singh’s commissioning is therefore more than the start of a naval career. It is the continuation of a family tradition built on service and strengthened by a mother’s perseverance, a father’s legacy and the commitment of two children who chose to wear the uniform.
