The Royal Netherlands Navy is set to enhance its underwater capabilities through a new contract with Naval Group for the supply of F21 heavyweight torpedoes, specifically designed for the upcoming Orka-class submarines. This agreement marks a significant milestone as the Netherlands becomes the first NATO partner to adopt the F21 system, following the Dutch government’s decision in March 2026 to integrate this advanced weaponry into its future fleet.
In addition to providing the torpedoes, Naval Group will offer comprehensive support services including sustainment, crew training, and simulators designed to prepare personnel for operational readiness. The F21 munitions are set to be deployed across four Orka submarines currently under development by the company, which aims to replace the aging Walrus-class submarines.
Vice Admiral Jan Willem Hartman, representing the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Materiel and IT Command, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that the signing of the contract is a crucial development in their strategic partnership. He expressed excitement about how the integration of the F21 torpedo will significantly boost the capabilities of the Royal Netherlands Navy and looks forward to the ensuing phases of their collaboration.
The F21 torpedo, developed to supersede Naval Group’s aging F17 anti-ship torpedo, has been modernized to incorporate advanced anti-submarine capabilities within a single design. Achieving operational status in 2019, the F21 is currently in use by both the French and Brazilian Navies across various types of submarines, including both conventional and nuclear-powered vessels.
Weighing in at 1,550 kilograms (3,417 pounds) and measuring 6 meters (20 feet) in length with a diameter of 533 millimeters (21 inches), the F21 features innovative technology including a proximity detonation mechanism that can engage targets at distances of up to 50 kilometers (31 miles). The torpedo is powered by an electric engine, achieving maximum speeds of 50 knots (93 kilometers/58 miles per hour) and capable of operating at depths reaching 600 meters (1,969 feet).
As the Netherlands invests in modernizing its naval capabilities, the Orka-class submarines equipped with the F21 torpedoes will play a pivotal role in safeguarding its maritime interests and enhancing its deterrence capabilities in the region.
