D. Navaneetha Krishnan, an army sepoy from the Madurai district, was praised by his officers for his gallantry in saving a woman who was being washed away in a canal in Punjab.
About the Incident
On June 16, Krishnan, who was posted as a driver in a hospital in Patiala, was returning to Sangrur in an army vehicle from Patiala. When he noticed a disturbance among the inhabitants in a nearby village, he got out of the van and found an elderly man pleading for aid to save a woman who was being washed away in a fast-flowing canal. With no one expressing any desire to assist the woman, the sepoy dashed towards the woman who was being swept away in the strong river. The sepoy leapt into the sea after racing about 100 metres in his full army fatigues.
His father, G. Duraisamy, an Alanganallur local, is pleased with his son’s actions. “When my son told me about the incident, I congratulated him on saving a life.” “When he joined the military, I told him not to be afraid of his life,” he added.
