The Australian government has initiated a significant military program aimed at developing medium-range precision loitering munition systems. This initiative is part of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) mission, specifically known as the Talon Strike program, which aims to create kinetic systems comparable to guided missiles.
A request for tenders has been released to expedite the procurement of this capability. The program emphasizes the need for a low-cost domestic solution that effectively bridges the gap between short and long-range capabilities, enhancing the operational effectiveness of the land combat forces in countering potential adversaries. The procurement process includes not only aerial platforms but also associated launchers, as well as transport and storage systems, with all munitions being designated for land launch.
Responses to the tender are sought until May 30, 2025, with a target delivery deadline set for December 2026. This timeline underscores the urgency of developing these advanced systems.
Pat Conroy, the Minister for Defence Industry, highlighted the program’s significance, stating that the launch of Mission Talon Strike is focused on quickly developing a priority capability. He noted that this initiative aligns with efforts made by the Albanese Government over the past three years to establish a domestically manufactured precision loitering munition capability capable of addressing contemporary threats with speed and accuracy. Minister Conroy reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Australian industry and innovation, which plays a crucial role in meeting the evolving needs of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
The Talon Strike program follows closely on the heels of another initiative, Mission Syracuse, which is focused on developing sovereign capabilities to counter small drones. Mission Syracuse aims to complement Project LAND 156, a comprehensive effort by the Australian Department of Defence to establish an effective counter-small drone capability for the ADF.
Major General Hugh Meggitt, who leads the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator, emphasized the program’s objective of enhancing the ADF’s capabilities in response to emerging threats. He pointed out that the government has mandated Defence to accelerate the acquisition of counter-drone systems through the 2024 National Defence Strategy. According to him, Mission Syracuse represents a critical investment in cutting-edge technological solutions that are designed to operate effectively both domestically and on the international stage.
