Australian Firm Secures Multi-Million-Dollar Deal to Supply Inertial Navigation Systems to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace

Advanced Navigation, an Australian technology firm, has secured a significant multi-million-dollar agreement to deliver over 50 of its Boreas D90 fiber-optic gyroscope inertial navigation systems to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. This contract is designed to bolster the capabilities of Kongsberg’s PROTECTOR RS4 system, enhancing its targeting accuracy and stabilizing sensor performance during scenarios where GPS integrity may be compromised, such as in cases of electronic warfare interference.

The Boreas D90 is recognized for its strategic-grade precision and is specifically engineered for use in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) access is limited or entirely unavailable. Its applications range from platform stabilization and precise targeting of antennas and sensors to aerial and land surveying, hydrography, and drone navigation.

Kongsberg’s PROTECTOR RS4 is a versatile system employed in over 30 countries, adaptable for a variety of weapons and payloads. This system serves across both land and maritime platforms and is equipped with a sophisticated sensor suite that encompasses day and night cameras, as well as a laser rangefinder. Notably, the PROTECTOR RS4 maintains a fixed line-of-sight of its targets, even when the host vehicle is in motion, thereby ensuring a high level of operational effectiveness.

This contract aligns with Australia’s Global Supply Chain Program, aimed at connecting local suppliers with international defense manufacturers, fostering a collaborative approach in defense technology. Chris Shaw, the CEO and co-founder of Advanced Navigation, highlighted the importance of cooperation between governments, regulators, and industry to establish an innovative ecosystem conducive to the rapid integration of advanced technologies. He emphasized that accelerating technology integration can enhance the deployment of next-generation systems and promote scalable autonomy within defense operations.

The incorporation of the Boreas D90 into Kongsberg’s offering promises to enhance the capabilities of defense systems, reinforcing Australia’s strategic role in the global defense landscape.
