Babcock Wins £114 Million Contract for Nuclear Defueling of Submarines

Babcock has secured a significant three-year, £114 million ($153 million) contract from the UK government, aimed at preparing for the nuclear defueling of four decommissioned Trafalgar-class submarines. This operation marks the first of its kind in over two decades, underscoring a pivotal step in the decommissioning process.

Scheduled to commence in 2026, the defueling operation is an essential preliminary phase before proceeding with the full dismantling of these submarines. The process entails the safe removal of nuclear fuel, which is conducted in close coordination with the Defence Nuclear Enterprise and various industry partners. The overarching goal of the initiative is to recover and recycle up to 90 percent of the materials from each submarine, ensuring a safe and environmentally responsible approach to disposing of the UK’s retired nuclear fleet.

The defueling work will take place at the Devonport facility in Plymouth, located in southwest England. “Collaboration with our industry partners plays an essential role in the Defence Nuclear Enterprise’s ability to support the national endeavor and maintain the UK’s nuclear deterrent,” remarked Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency, highlighting the importance of teamwork in this complex operation.

In conjunction with these decommissioning efforts, the UK is actively planning for the future of its naval capabilities as part of a broader Strategic Defence Review. This review, unveiled recently, outlines the intention to develop a new fleet of submarines, including up to 12 new SSN-AUKUS conventionally armed and nuclear-powered submarines. This initiative is part of a trilateral agreement with the United States and Australia, aimed at enhancing defense capabilities in the region.

Additionally, as part of its commitment to bolstering national security, the UK government has announced plans to increase defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027. This increase represents the largest sustained military expansion in the UK since the Cold War, reflecting a strategic pivot towards strengthening military readiness and modernizing the defense sector in response to evolving global challenges.
