BAE Systems and Air Force Research Laboratory Partner to Advance Quantum Sensing and Networking

BAE Systems’ FAST Labs and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have formalized a partnership with a three-year agreement aimed at enhancing quantum sensing and networking technologies. The collaboration is set to focus on improving military communications, enhancing monitoring of the electromagnetic spectrum, and paving the way for future civilian applications.

Central to this agreement is BAE Systems’ initiative to expand its use of quantum sensors that leverage Rydberg atoms. These highly energized atoms exhibit an exceptional sensitivity to radio signals, allowing sensors endowed with this technology to detect a broad spectrum of signals while being compact enough to integrate into smaller devices. This innovative approach is expected to significantly advance the capabilities available to the military.

Throughout the duration of the project, the AFRL will contribute its extensive knowledge in the development of quantum networks. Research and testing will be conducted at multiple locations, including BAE Systems’ facility in Merrimack, New Hampshire, AFRL’s Information Directorate in Rome, New York, and an AFRL field site in Stockbridge, New York.

Jane Heyes, the principal scientist at BAE Systems’ FAST Labs, emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership. “This agreement will enable us to push the boundaries of quantum sensing and networking,” she stated, highlighting the implications for soldier communications, spectrum awareness, and electronic warfare.

Dr. Erin Sheridan, a research physicist in quantum information science at AFRL, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that the amalgamation of industry expertise in sensing with AFRL’s networking research is central to the initiative’s goals. Sheridan pointed to the exciting prospects of combining multiple quantum radio frequency sensors into an array, which could deliver unprecedented capabilities for military personnel.

The collaboration between BAE Systems and AFRL signals a significant step forward in the application of quantum technology in defense scenarios and beyond, with the potential to revolutionize both military and civilian communication infrastructures.
