BAE Systems Opens $250 Million Shiplift Facility in Jacksonville, Florida

BAE Systems has opened a state-of-the-art shiplift and land-level repair complex at its shipyard located in Jacksonville, Florida. This substantial investment of $250 million marks a significant advancement in the company’s ship repair capabilities and highlights its vital role in supporting both the US Navy and the commercial maritime sector.

The new facility replaces an outdated 80-year-old dry dock that had reached the end of its operational lifespan. With an impressive shiplift platform measuring 492 by 110 feet (150 by 34 meters), this new installation is designated as the largest of its kind in the Americas and ranks among the top ten globally.

Once operational, the integrated shiplift and repair facility will provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and modernization services tailored for surface combatants stationed at Naval Station Mayport, along with various commercial vessels that transit through the Port of Jacksonville. The shiplift boasts a lift capacity of up to 25,000 tons (50,000,000 pounds) and allows for concurrent maintenance on multiple vessels, thereby tripling the performance capabilities of the previously used facility.

This ambitious project was developed in partnership with Pearlson Shiplift Corporation, Foth Engineering, and Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., underscoring a collaborative effort to enhance regional maritime operations. The facility is slated for its inaugural operational lift later this month.

At the opening ceremony, BAE Systems’ CEO and President Tom Arseneault spoke to the significance of the project, stating, “The introduction of our new shiplift and land level repair facility represents more than just progress for BAE Systems Ship Repair — it reflects a shared commitment to innovation, growth, and collaboration.” He emphasized the company’s dedication to partnering with the United States Navy and other key industry stakeholders, reiterating their joint mission to uphold the nation’s maritime superiority.

This new facility marks a significant leap forward in enhancing the region’s ship repair capacity while creating job opportunities, further solidifying Jacksonville’s strategic importance in maritime operations.
