BEL Signs ₹1,640 Crore Contract with Defence Ministry for Advanced Air Defence Radars

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has entered into a substantial contract valued at ₹1,640 crore with the Ministry of Defence for the supply of advanced Air Defence Fire Control Radars, a pivotal initiative aimed at modernizing the Indian Army’s air defence capabilities. This contract underscores the Army’s commitment to enhancing its operational effectiveness in an increasingly complex security landscape.

The design of these cutting-edge radars comes from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with BEL tasked with their production. As detailed in BEL’s filings with the Bombay Stock Exchange, the radar systems will be integral for functions including surveillance, detection, acquisition, and tracking of aerial targets. Furthermore, they will have the capability to guide air defence weaponry, thereby enabling the neutralization of various aerial threats, which include fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, and unmanned drones.

The Ministry of Defence has emphasized the commitment to indigenous manufacturing, stating that these radar systems will feature a minimum of 70 percent indigenous content. This move aligns with the broader goal of promoting self-reliance in defence production. The radars are designed to be modular, ensuring adaptability across a range of operational scenarios, and they can function effectively in all weather conditions. Equipped with advanced electronic countermeasure capabilities, the systems can operate both day and night, enhancing their utility in diverse combat situations.

An official statement from the Ministry of Defence highlighted the importance of these radars in bolstering the operational readiness of Indian Army units while supporting the government’s vision for self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing.

In addition to this major contract, BEL recently reported securing further orders worth ₹563 crore. These orders encompass a variety of defence technologies, including navigation systems, satellite communication interception systems, active antenna arrays, jammers, seekers, and communication equipment, reaffirming BEL’s role as a key player in the defence sector.
