Commemoration Of Birth Anniversary: Late General Bipin Rawat

The Indian Navy remembers Late General Bipin Rawat, the first Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces, on his 65th birthday, March 16, 2023. General Rawat was known for his professionalism, principles, conviction, and decisiveness as a visionary leader, scholar soldier, and military reformer. General Rawat’s achievements in all spheres of military and national security affairs were remarkable over a distinguished four-decade career.

Indian Navy’s way of Honoring the Late CDS Gen Bipin Rawat

General Rawat, as the first CDS and Secy DMA, advocated for organizational and structural reforms to better integrate the Armed Forces. His legacy will include ground-breaking transformational initiatives and civil-military collaboration. General Rawat’s enthusiasm inspired the Armed Forces to make Agnipath, the largest HR transformation undertaken by the Armed Forces since independence, a reality.

The Indian Navy is instituting two trophies to recognize and honor Gen Rawat’s contribution to the transformational Agnipath scheme and to the enhancement of Tri-Services synergy and joint manship:

  • General Bipin Rawat rolling trophy for ‘Women Agniveer Trainee standing First in Overall Order of Merit’. This trophy will be presented by the Chief of Naval Staff during the ‘Passing Out Parade’ of the first batch of Navy Agnives on March 28, 2023, at INS Chilka, the Navy’s premier sailors training center.
  • The General Bipin Rawat Rolling Trophy is awarded to the ‘Most Spirited Officer’ enrolled in the Naval Higher Command Course (NHCC) at the Naval War College (NWC), Goa.

About Late CDS Gen Bipin Rawat

General Bipin Rawat was India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and a highly regarded military commander. He was born on March 15, 1958, in Pauri Garhwal, a small town in Uttarakhand. Today, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, let us reflect on his contributions to the Indian Armed Forces and his legacy.

General Rawat held a number of important positions in the Indian Army during his distinguished career. He was the Vice Chief of Army Staff, the Southern Command’s General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, and the Eastern Command’s General Officer Commanding-in-Chief. He also took part in several major military operations, including Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and Operation Maitri in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake. The creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff was General Rawat’s most significant contribution to the Indian Armed Forces. The CDS is a four-star officer who serves as the government’s and Prime Minister’s senior military advisor.

General Rawat was also well-known for his efforts to modernize the Indian Armed Forces and integrate new technologies into their operations. He emphasized the military’s need to adapt to a changing geopolitical landscape, as well as the growing importance of cyber and space domains. He was a vocal proponent of using artificial intelligence and big data analytics in military operations.

Unfortunately, General Rawat’s life was cut short in a tragic helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8, 2021. When the accident occurred, he was on his way to inspect the progress of a military installation. His untimely death devastated the Indian Armed Forces and the country as a whole.
