British engineering firm BMT, in collaboration with Japan Marine United (JMU), has been awarded a contract to develop a next-generation High Speed Landing Craft for the Japan Self Defense Forces (JSDF). This partnership is set to leverage BMT’s maritime systems design expertise alongside JMU’s surface vessel manufacturing capabilities to produce the new craft, which aims to modernize Japan’s military capabilities.
The new vessel will draw from BMT’s existing Caimen Family of Landing Craft, which is already in use in the UK for international military partners. The construction of the landing craft will take place at JMU’s manufacturing facilities across Japan, ensuring that the project utilizes local resources and expertise to meet the specific needs of the JSDF.
In a statement regarding the contract, Akinori Takeno, JMU Director and Senior Managing Officer, expressed enthusiasm for the strategic partnership. “We are pleased to announce the strategic partnership with BMT, which will see our company meet the procurement programmes of the Japan Ministry of Defense,” he said. “By combining BMT’s innovative design concepts with our exceptional technologies and facilities, we hope to deliver landing crafts that exceed expectations. This partnership highlights our commitment to innovation and excellence in the maritime industry.”
The High Speed Landing Craft is designed to be a reliable platform with a length of 30 meters (approximately 98 feet) and a specialized tri-bow hull form. This design is intended to enhance performance, seakeeping, and beaching capabilities. The craft is expected to reach speeds exceeding 20 knots (37 kilometers per hour or 23 miles per hour), which is crucial for responsiveness in critical military missions.
The completed landing craft will serve as a vital asset for the JSDF, facilitating the swift and safe transport of tactical vehicles and personnel across various maritime conditions. BMT’s Commercial Maritime Sales Head, Martin Bissuel, highlighted the significance of the contract, noting that “the next-generation High Speed Landing Craft stands out as a pivotal investment for the Japan Self Defense Force.” He added that the Caimen Japan offers an advanced, reliable, and highly functional platform that significantly enhances maritime operational capabilities and emphasizes the importance of international partnerships in technological and defense advancements.
This contract signifies a meaningful advancement in the collaborative relationship between British and Japanese defense industries, demonstrating a mutual commitment to strengthening maritime defense capabilities while fostering innovation within the sector.
