Brazil Interested in Indian Akash Missiles and Garuda Howitzers for Military Modernization

Brazil is moving forward with plans to enhance its military capabilities, expressing interest in acquiring two advanced defense systems developed in India: the Akash surface-to-air missile and the Garuda self-propelled howitzer. Reports from local media outlets in Bharat indicate that this initiative aligns with Brazil’s broader efforts to modernize its armed forces and diversify its military equipment through partnerships with international contractors.

In response to Brazil’s interest, New Delhi has confirmed that discussions are underway between its foreign affairs ministry and Brasília regarding the potential military sale. This acquisition could lead to a comprehensive collaboration encompassing technology exchange, joint research, and co-production efforts between the two nations.

The proposed military package is not limited to just the Akash and Garuda systems but also includes potential cooperation in the development of battlefield communication systems, enhancements for coastal surveillance, and the design of new offshore patrol vessels. Furthermore, both countries are evaluating the feasibility of establishing a joint sustainment operation for the French-designed Scorpène-class submarines currently used by their maritime forces.

The Akash missile, noted for its impressive specifications, is about 6 meters (20 feet) in length, with a diameter of 30 centimeters (12 inches) and a weight of 720 kilograms (1,587 pounds). This missile operates on solid fuel and features an advanced propulsion system that includes both an air-augmented rocket and a ramjet motor. It is designed with a radio-proximity fuze that maximizes its fragmentation effects. The Akash exhibits a top speed of Mach 2.5, reaching operational altitudes of 20,000 meters (65,617 feet) and capable of engaging targets up to 30 kilometers (19 miles) away.

On the other hand, the Garuda platform embodies a 105-millimeter light field gun mounted on a 4×4 wheeled vehicle, making it versatile across different terrains. This howitzer can deliver an impressive rate of fire, with the ability to launch up to six rounds in ten minutes. It achieves a muzzle velocity of 475 meters (1,558 feet) per second and can strike targets at a maximum range of 20 kilometers (12 miles).

As India and Brazil explore these collaborative defense initiatives, the potential impact on regional security dynamics and military cooperation in South America could be significant, fostering deeper ties between the two countries while enhancing their respective military readiness.
