British Army Seeks Autonomous Platform to Enhance Apache Helicopter Capabilities

The British Army is actively seeking to develop an autonomous collaborative platform (ACP) to enhance the operational capabilities of its Apache AH-64E helicopter fleet. Following the recent deployment of the Royal Air Force’s StormShroud ACP in May, the Army aims to integrate an unmanned system capable of conducting missions focused on reconnaissance, target acquisition, strikes, and neutralizing countermeasures. This initiative is expected to considerably augment the lethality and survivability of crewed aircraft.

A notice posted on the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) sourcing portal specifies that the envisioned system should operate with a high degree of autonomy, allowing for “command” rather than direct control by operators. This shift is aimed at facilitating more efficient mission execution while potentially reducing operator workload.

The proposal outlines the desired features of the uncrewed air system, stating it should be able to take off and land vertically, possess a payload capacity exceeding 200 kilograms (441 pounds), and include a comprehensive support network. Additionally, the system must support fully autonomous command and control functions or adjustable levels of autonomy. Key technologies such as AI-based decision-making, digital twins, synthetic environments, and stringent digital security standards are emphasized.

To advance this project, the British Army is set to host an industry workshop on 21 August at the UK’s Defence BattleLab in Dorset. This workshop will bring together various stakeholders from the defense industry to discuss potential solutions for the unmanned aerial system (UAS). The MoD’s Defence and Security Equipment International aims to leverage this gathering to gain insights into the technological readiness and potential options available for the project, further indicating a collaborative approach to defense innovation.
