The Border Roads Organization (BRO) completed the strategically important Leh-Manali Highway (NH 3) in 138 days on March 25, 2023. Last year, it took BRO 144 days to open the motorway to traffic. It is a 427-kilometer-long strategic highway that connects Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali. It is critical for the movement of armed forces and supplies to forward areas in Ladakh, as well as connecting the people of Ladakh to India.
The highway is an alternative route to the 422 km long Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway (NH-1D), opened on March 16, 2023, by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). On March 23, 2023, BRO opened the mighty Shinkula Pass at 16,580 feet on the Nimmu-Padum-Darch road in a record time of 55 days.
The Leh-Manali motorway is usually closed from the end of November when winter begins until it reopens in March. BRO frontline Project Himank in Ladakh and Project Deepak in Himachal Pradesh cleared the entire 427 km road of snow. These complex operations were launched from opposite ends of the road by two separate teams comprised of skilled personnel and cutting-edge machinery. When the two snow-clearing teams met in Sarchu, Himachal Pradesh, a ‘Golden Handshake’ ceremony was held to declare the motorway open.
