Burundian Soldiers Suffer Losses in Ongoing DR Congo Fighting Despite Peace Deal

At least 20 Burundian soldiers have lost their lives amid escalating clashes in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as confirmed by military sources to AFP on Saturday. This outbreak of violence comes just days after a significant peace agreement was established in Washington, aimed at stabilizing the long-troubled, resource-rich eastern region.

The peace deal, signed on Thursday, was intended to bring an end to decades of conflict that have beleaguered the area. However, the impact of this agreement has remained largely ineffective on the ground thus far. The region continues to grapple with violent confrontations, particularly between government forces and the M23, a prominent anti-government armed group.

Intense fighting has been reported in South Kivu province, primarily focused on the border town of Kamanyola, a strategic location where the territories of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi converge. Currently, M23 holds control over Kamanyola, further complicating the situation for the Congolese army, which is receiving support from Burundian troops.

In response to the escalating conflict, Burundi has been sending additional reinforcements to bolster its military presence in the area. The Burundian government is determined to thwart the M23’s advance towards Uvira, a neighboring town, as tensions escalate across the region.

Military sources revealed that among the casualties were a lieutenant colonel and his three accompanying guards, who were reportedly killed during a drone strike on Thursday in the Rusizi plain. The Burundian forces have reportedly inflicted losses on the M23 group and claim to have managed to contain their operations, although specific details remain scarce.

As the violence continues, an AFP correspondent in South Kivu has confirmed that the fighting is ongoing. The mounting casualties have added strain on military circles in Bujumbura, prompting President Evariste Ndayishimiye to abruptly conclude his visit to Washington amid the brewing crisis.
