The “Combined Defence Services” (CDS) Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of candidates into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy.

The CDS 2 2020 English Paper consisted of the total 100 marks with 10 questions from each of the 10 topics, namely, Spotting Errors, Antonyms, Synonyms, Idioms & Phrases, Fill in the Blanks, Ordering of Words in a Sentence, Ordering of Sentences in a Paragraph, Comprehension, Parts of Speech and Spelling, & 20 questions from the 11th topic, Cloze Test or Cloze Composition, amounting to a total of 120 questions. In CDS 2 2020 English Paper, no questions came from the topics like Sentence Improvement, Active Passive Voice, Reported Speech, One Word Substitution and Transformation of Sentences.
As per the difficulty level, the question paper for the English paper of CDS 2 2020 Exam, was very easy to attempt. For a candidate with a good and strong knowledge of grammar and clear grammatical concepts, the questions, especially from the ‘Spotting Errors’ topic, were a cakewalk. A very basic to medium level of knowledge for Vocabulary is needed for a candidate to solve questions from ‘Antonyms’, ‘Synonyms’, ‘Idioms & Phrases’ and ‘Spelling’. Candidates who applied basic and tricky shortcuts for ‘Ordering of Words’ & ‘Ordering of Sentences’ cracked the questions very easily. The part which was a bit tedious and lengthy for the candidates to solve was the ‘Cloze Composition’ section.
The English paper of CDS 2 2020 Exam was overall easy for those who studied the English curriculum thoroughly and acquired strong knowledge of both English grammar and vocabulary. But students who skipped either of the vocabulary or the grammar part of the CDS English syllabus and concentrated mainly on the rest of the topics faced a major difficulty in solving the CDS 2 2020 English paper.
