On Wednesday, at least ten police officers and a goods van driver were murdered in an explosion staged by suspected Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada. The location is around 450 km from the state capital of Raipur. According to police sources, Maoists used an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to blow up a commodities minivan in which security men were traveling.

The incident came a day after Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P stated that more than 400 Maoist cadres surrender each year. “On average, over 400 Maoist cadres surrender each year.” Sundarraj P cited a specific campaign called “Lone Varratu” that was held in District Dantewada for this aim.

Following the incident on Wednesday, Sundarraj stated that the bodies are being transported from the scene and that the Maoists are being sought. Head constable Joga Sodhi, Munna Ram Kadti, Santosh Tamo, Dulgo Mandavi, Lakhmu Markam, Joga Kawasi, Hariram Mandavi, gopaniya sainiks Raju Ram Kartan, Jairam Podiam, and Jagadish Kawasi were among those killed. The attack on Wednesday was the second in Chhattisgarh in as many weeks. On April 17, a DRG jawan was injured in a similar attack in Bijapur.

The District Reserve Guard (DRG), a special section of the Chhattisgarh police dedicated to combating Maoists, was on an anti-naxal operation in the area, according to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. “It is very sad to learn of the martyrdom of our ten DRG jawans and a driver as a result of an IED blast on the DRG force that had arrived for an anti-Naxal operation based on information of the presence of Maoist cadre in the Aranpur police station area of Dantewada.”

On April 18, the Chhattisgarh Police killed a Maoist cadre in an encounter and arrested two others in the Bastar district. The same day, Maoists opened fire on Congress MLA Vikram Mandavi’s convoy, but he managed to escape. A Chhattisgarh Police jawan was badly injured two days later in an IED blast in the insurgency-hit Bijapur area.
