China Enhances Air Defense with Amphibious HQ-13 Variant

China has unveiled an innovative variant of its HQ-13 short-range air defense (SHORAD) system that introduces amphibious capabilities, significantly bolstering its air defense measures for coastal and maritime operations. This new model was introduced to the public on November 9 and combines the existing HQ-13 launcher and radar technologies with the Type 05 infantry vehicle, commonly referred to as the ZBD-05.

The integration of the HQ-13 system with the Type 05 vehicle positions the amphibious platform to accompany the People’s Liberation Army Marine Corps as they engage in landing operations. This development is particularly crucial as it aims to shield military forces from a variety of aerial threats, including helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.

This strategic enhancement underscores China’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in contested waters, where maritime operations are increasingly prominent. The introduction of the amphibious HQ-13 not only provides improved air defense for landing troops but also reflects the ongoing modernization of China’s military technology in response to evolving regional security dynamics.

As tensions in the area continue to rise, China’s focus on enhancing its amphibious operations capability demonstrates a significant shift in military strategy, with the potential to alter the balance of power in the region.
