Srinagar is all set to host the Tourism Working Group of G20 from May22-24th and before that China has stepback to attend the meeting. China officially announced that it will not attend the upcoming G20 tourism meet that is scheduled to be hosted in Srinagar, Kashmir. Pakistan along with China have criticised India for Holding the event in Kashmir. Due to this region, there have been three wars and both countries claim the entirety of the region but govern part of it. In the run-up to the G20 summit in New Delhi in September, India, which has the chair this year, has scheduled a series of meetings across the country.
“China is firmly opposed to holding any kind of G20 meeting in disputed territory, and will not attend such meetings,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Friday. Since 2019, when New Delhi modified the status of Jammu and Kashmir state, ending its special status and converting it into a federal entity, relations between India and Pakistan have been frozen. It divided the state into two federal areas, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. A significant portion of Ladakh is under Chinese influence. For decades, the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir has been roiled by an insurgency seeking independence or union with Pakistan, killing tens of thousands of civilians, troops, and Kashmiri rebels.
Pakistan Running Campaign for the Boycott of the G20 Event in Kashmir
Regardless of their own internal political turmoil, the Pakistan establishment and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), according to Indian intelligence agencies, are waging a smear campaign against India’s planned G20 summit in the Kashmir Valley. In addition to waging a social media campaign, Pakistan’s foreign office has written to all missions abroad to create a hostile environment.
The third G20 tourism working group meeting will take place in Srinagar from May 22 to 24 at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC). Indian security authorities have taken extensive preparations to ensure the event runs smoothly. While Pakistan’s close allies China and Turkey are not sending delegates, Saudi Arabia has opted to send a representative which is a major blow to Pakistan.
According to Indian intelligence agencies, Pakistan diplomats have been instructed to push hashtags and propaganda material aimed at maligning India. They cite a letter dated May 12 from Pakistan’s foreign office with the topic ‘Scuttling G20 conference in India’s Kashmir’. Islamabad appears to have enlisted the help of a number of groups and colleges in its propaganda campaign. For example, the Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR) has written to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to express its displeasure with India. Similarly, the Kashmir Diaspora Coalition (KDC) urged all G20 heads of state not to attend the conference in India.
