Colonel Navjot Singh Bal, Shaurya Chakra, of the Indian Army’s elite 2 Para (Special Forces), is celebrated as an emblem of courage, resilience, and leadership in contemporary military history. Known for his exceptional performance in rigorous counter-insurgency operations, he later faced a personal battle against a rare and aggressive cancer, demonstrating the same determination that characterized his military service.
Hailing from a family steeped in military tradition, Colonel Bal was the son of Colonel K.S. Bal (Retd) from the Garhwal Rifles and grew up in Chhajjal Waddi village, Jandiala Guru, near Amritsar, Punjab. Influenced by an upbringing centered on discipline and national service, he embraced values of courage and integrity early on. His schooling at Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, shaped his formative years, where he met his future wife, Arti. The couple later had two sons, Zorawar and Shahbaaz.
In 1998, driven by a deep desire to serve his country, he joined the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 2002. Upon completing the demanding probation period, he secured a position within the distinguished 2 Para (Special Forces), famed for its exacting operational standards and high-risk missions. Colonel Bal’s career was marked by exemplary physical and mental prowess as well as tactical excellence.
His notable combat achievements were highlighted during a significant counter-insurgency operation in the Upper Lolab Valley of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir in 2008. Engaging terrorists in a treacherous firefight, he displayed exceptional bravery by eliminating two adversaries at close quarters. For this act of gallantry, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime military honor.
In addition to his commendable combat service, Colonel Bal contributed significantly in various roles, including a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo, where he gained invaluable international experience. He later served in the Operations branch at Headquarters Northern Command, playing a pivotal role in planning operations linked to the 2016 surgical strikes across the Line of Control. His career reflected not just battlefield valor but also strategic proficiency.
On 20 March 2018, Colonel Bal took command of the Bengaluru-based 2 Para (Special Forces). Recognized for his exceptional physical fitness, he led by example, often outperforming his troops in physical challenges like one-arm pull-ups and endurance events.
However, life took a poignant turn in May 2018 when a routine workout revealed a lump in his right elbow. A medical diagnosis confirmed a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer known as Telangiectatic osteosarcoma. Even as he underwent chemotherapy, Colonel Bal maintained his leadership role. In January 2019, he faced a significant challenge as medical professionals performed an amputation of his right arm to prevent the cancer’s spread.
Displaying remarkable resilience, Colonel Bal adapted to his circumstances, relearning basic and professional skills with his left hand, and continued to exercise leadership within his unit. His ability to confront adversity head-on inspired his troops and transformed his empty sleeve into a powerful symbol of courage and perseverance.
As the disease progressed, Colonel Bal remained steadfast in his commitment to duty, refusing to let his illness diminish his leadership. His presence resonated deeply with those under his command, embodying the ethos of the Special Forces—“Balidan,” translating to sacrifice.
In his final moments, he reportedly penned a heartfelt message expressing love for his family, regiment, and nation. Colonel Navjot Singh Bal passed away on 9 April 2020, at the age of 39, in a military hospital in Bengaluru. Despite the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, his parents made a challenging journey from Gurugram to Bengaluru to pay their last respects. He was cremated with full military honors on 13 April 2020.
