In a significant leadership transition for the Indian Navy, Commodore Rajat Kumar has officially taken over command of INS Dega from Commodore Shivaji Yadav on January 9, 2026. The handover ceremony, held at the naval air station in Visakhapatnam, showcased the rich traditions of the Indian Navy, with a formal parade attended by officers, sailors, and airmen of the station.
Commodore Rajat Kumar, a qualified MiG-29K pilot, becomes the 21st Commanding Officer of INS Dega, an establishment of critical importance on India’s eastern seaboard. This air station is not only prestigious but also plays a vital role in bolstering naval aviation operations in the Bay of Bengal and the broader Indo-Pacific region. It is equipped to host a variety of assets, including frontline fighter aircraft, maritime patrol units, and helicopter squads, thereby enhancing the operational capabilities of the Eastern Naval Command.
With his extensive operational flying background and proven leadership skills, Commodore Kumar is anticipated to further enhance the combat readiness of INS Dega. His focus will likely center on improving training standards and fostering a culture of aviation safety, ensuring that the air station continues to meet the high demands of modern naval operations. As tensions in the region persist, the ability of INS Dega to provide effective support and rapid response becomes increasingly crucial.
