Common Mission Project UK Launches Hacking for Defense Program in Germany

A significant advancement in the field of defense education has emerged as Common Mission Project UK announces the launch of its Hacking for Defense (H4D) program in Germany. This initiative, in collaboration with the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, represents the first foray of the program into continental Europe.

Set to commence in the second quarter of 2026, the H4D program will engage three teams of master’s level students from the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. These students will embark on an 11-week curriculum designed to tackle real-world cyber challenges while honing their skills in a practical environment.

The curriculum is meticulously aligned with Berlin’s national defense priorities, as well as broader European strategies aimed at enhancing resilience in the face of ongoing conflicts, particularly along the continent’s eastern front. Participants will engage in stakeholder interviews, experiment with various concepts, and develop viable solutions at an accelerated pace.

Leading the inaugural group of trainees is Prof. Karl-Heinz Renner, the university’s vice president for teaching and stakeholder relations. His guidance is anticipated to ensure a focused and impactful learning experience for students involved in this pioneering program.

Alison Hawks, co-founder of the Common Mission Project, emphasized that the introduction of H4D in Germany reflects a growing acknowledgment across Europe of the critical role that future warfighters play in bolstering defense, security, and resilience amid persisting regional conflicts. She stated, “We are committed to supporting Europe’s investment in this generation with the impact of H4D at University of the Bundeswehr Munich,” and expressed optimism that this initiative marks the inception of a broader movement within Germany and the wider European defense ecosystem.

Established in 2016 following the pilot launch of the Hacking for Defense program at Stanford University, the Common Mission Project has been instrumental in bridging the gap between students and defense and national security organizations. By utilizing innovative methods typically employed by startups, the project empowers students to address operational challenges effectively.

Since its inception, the initiative’s focus on digital security has expanded to encompass 90 universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. To date, over 4,800 students have engaged with the program, collectively exploring around 1,400 national security topics, which range from casualty management systems to cyber threat detection.

The successful rollout of the H4D program in Germany signals an important step forward in academic contributions to national security efforts and the cultivation of a skilled workforce prepared to meet the challenges of modern defense.
