Construction Begins on Rocket Fuel Facility for Ukraine in Denmark

Danish and Ukrainian officials have officially commenced construction on a facility in Denmark that will supply critical rocket fuel to Ukraine, a significant development as it marks the potential first such operation within a NATO country. This initiative comes in response to the ongoing security concerns faced by Ukraine, which has been the target of repeated attacks on its arms production facilities since the onset of Russia’s invasion in 2022. The conflict has compelled Ukraine to seek secure international locations for the manufacturing of defense materials.

During a ground-breaking ceremony held in the town of Vojens, Danish Industry Minister Morten Bodskov emphasized the importance of support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom, stating, “We must help our Ukrainian friends.” He highlighted the necessity of creating a stable environment for defense production, which the new facility aims to provide.

While Danish officials noted that they could not definitively confirm whether this was indeed the first such facility of its kind, they acknowledged that there could be other similar operations developed under secrecy for security purposes. The facility, which is expected to begin producing both rocket and drone fuel by autumn 2026, has been established in partnership with the Ukrainian firm Fire Point. The company specializes in the development of drones and missiles for military use.

Fire Point’s CEO, Vyacheslav Bondarchuk, remarked on the need to increase production capabilities, which he stated is currently unfeasible within Ukraine due to ongoing conflict. He expressed appreciation for Denmark’s welcoming approach, noting, “If we have to choose a country, I would say Denmark is the one that welcomes us best.”

Bodskov also mentioned that Fire Point intends to introduce “new technologies” into the Danish defense landscape, complimenting the region’s existing flourishing defense industry. The facility’s strategic location near Skrydstrup airbase, where Ukrainian pilots are being trained on F-16s, further amplifies its importance. This site had recently experienced mysterious drone activities, which Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attributed to potential Russian involvement.

However, not all local residents are fully supportive of the new facility. Some have expressed concerns over heightened risk, with one resident, Marielle, articulating her discomfort about Denmark potentially becoming a target for Russian aggression. “I don’t like it, it’s too much. We are a small country, we have paid a lot of money to Ukraine,” she said, emphasizing her fears regarding security implications for the community.

In response to these apprehensions, Danish authorities have assured residents that stringent security measures would be enforced around the facility to safeguard both the production process and the surrounding community. Minister Bodskov affirmed, “No compromises have been made regarding security for production, of course, but also for the local community.”
