Union Budget 2025-26

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2025-26 in the Lok Sabha. It will be the second budget of the Narendra Modi government in its third term.
  • Ahead of the budget presentation, the economic survey was tabled in both houses of Parliament yesterday, giving an overview of the economy’s performance.

  • This will be Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s eighth consecutive budget presentation since taking office in 2019. After the presentation of the budget in the Lok Sabha, a copy of the budget will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
  • During her pre-budget consultations, the finance minister held meetings with several stakeholders, including experts and representatives from farmer associations and agriculture economists, trade unions, the education and health sector, MSMEs, trade and services, industry, economists, the financial sector, and capital markets.
  • On 1st February 2021, Finance Minister Sitharaman presented the first paperless budget, and the digital budget has been presented ever since then. The first part of the budget session will be held till 13th February, while the second leg of the session will be held from 10th March to 4th April.

India Adds 4 New Ramsar Sites

  • Centre has announced the addition of four new Ramsar sites in India, taking the tally to 89. In a social media post, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said that ahead of World Wetlands Day, the government announced that Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Therthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, Khecheopalri Wetland in Sikkim, and Udhwa Lake in Jharkhand have been included in the list of Ramsar sites in the country.

  • In the post, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared that India still stands as the country with the highest number of Ramsar sites in Asia and third in the world. He congratulated Tamil Nadu for becoming the state with the maximum number of Ramsar sites, with a tally of 20.
  • He also termed this a special achievement for Sikkim and Jharkhand, which have added their first Ramsar sites. World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2 to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and promote conservation efforts globally.

  • This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, an international treaty focused on the protection and sustainable use of wetlands. Wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. The theme for World Wetlands Day 2025 is “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.”

World Book Fair 2025

  • New Delhi World Book Fair 2025 will commence on 1st February at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This year, the fair’s theme is ‘We the People of India’, commemorating 75 years of the Republic of India.
  • The nine-day fair will be inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu. Speaking to Akashvani News, the Director of the National Book Trust, Yuvraj Malik, highlighted that this year, Russia is the focus country of the fair, and over 50 countries will participate, including France, Argentina, Spain, Colombia, UAE, and Qatar. He added that nearly two thousand publishers and one thousand speakers will attend the fair.

Niger 1st African Country To Eliminate Onchocerciasis

  • Niger becomes the first country in the African Region to eliminate onchocerciasis.
  • Niger’s Minister of Public Health, Population and Social Affairs Garba Hakimi officially declared at a ceremony that the country is free of onchocerciasis. The World Health Organisation (WHO) congratulated Niger on achieving the standard required to eliminate onchocerciasis.

  • Niger is recognised as the fifth country in the world, the first in Africa, to have successfully halted the transmission of the parasite Onchocerca volvulus. The other four countries that have reached this milestone are all located in the Americas: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico.

  • The resident representative of the WHO, Casimir Manengu, commended Niger’s commitment and leadership that enabled this remarkable achievement.
  • Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease and is the second leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, after trachoma. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infective black flies, primarily found in riverine areas.
  • The disease primarily affects rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa and Yemen, with smaller endemic areas found in parts of Latin America.

US Prez Trump Imposes Aggressive Tariffs On China

  • White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will be slapping aggressive tariffs on major US trading partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico, from today.
  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the US will be levying 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada as well as a 10 percent duty on China for allowing the distribution of the illegal fentanyl into the US, which has killed tens of millions of Americans.
  • She, however, declined to offer additional details on the new tariffs. Donald Trump has said he wants Canada and Mexico to stop the flow of undocumented immigrants and illegal drugs into the United States.

Shubhanshu Shukla

  • India’s space exploration has just reached a new milestone with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla set to become the first Indian astronaut to pilot a space mission to the International Space Station (ISS).
  • He has been chosen as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private spaceflight scheduled for launch in the spring of 2025. This marks a significant moment in India’s space history, continuing the journey that started 40 years ago with Rakesh Sharma’s iconic spaceflight.

  • Axiom Mission 4, or Ax-4, is a private spaceflight organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA. The mission will see astronauts travel to the International Space Station for a stay of up to 14 days.
  • The astronauts will conduct scientific research, engage in educational outreach, and take part in various commercial activities while in a microgravity environment. The crew will travel aboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule, which will be launched atop a Falcon 9 rocket.
  • This mission marks an important step in the partnership between private space organizations and NASA to push the boundaries of space exploration. The crew of Ax-4 consists of four astronauts, each bringing unique experience and expertise to the mission:

  • Legendary former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar will be honoured with the BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Board’s annual gala in Mumbai. Tendulkar will become the 31st recipient of the prestigious award, which was instituted in 1994 in honour of India’s first cricket captain, Col. C.K. Nayudu.

  • The 51-year-old Tendulkar, who played an incredible 664 international matches for India, holds the record for the highest number of Test and ODI runs in cricket history.
  • He amassed 15,921 runs in Tests and a staggering 18,426 runs in ODIs. Tendulkar also holds the record for the most appearances in both formats, with 200 Test matches and 463 ODIs to his name. Tendulkar was a pivotal member of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team, marking his record sixth and final appearance in the tournament.
