International Labour Day 2025

  • International Labour Day 2025 will be celebrated worldwide on Thursday, 1st May 2025. Dedicated to recognising the efforts, sacrifices, and achievements of the global workforce, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the historic struggles that shaped the rights and protections workers enjoy today.

  • The roots of International Labour Day lie in the late 19th-century labour movement in the United States. On May 1, 1886, thousands of American workers began a nationwide strike demanding an eight-hour workday.
  • The movement reached a tragic peak during the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where a bomb blast led to the deaths of seven police officers and at least four civilians. In 1889, the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day to commemorate this historic struggle.

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed about the cabinet decision. Mr Vaishnaw said the move demonstrates that the Narendra Modi government is committed to the values and interests of the society and country, like in the past when it had introduced ten per cent reservation for the economically weaker sections without causing stress in any section of the society. Prime Minister of Canada

  • Mark Carney will continue as Prime Minister of Canada as Liberal Party has won the election for House of Commons. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat after failing to bring an end to the dominance of the Liberal Party.
  • The political newcomer and former banker Carney successfully steered the Liberals to an outstanding victory after running neck-and-neck with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the lead-up to election day. However, Canada is still counting votes and the Liberal party is leading in 168 seats while they need 172 for a majority.
image 19
  • If they clear the threshold, they will secure a majority government. If they get less than 172 seats – as they did under Justin Trudeau in 2021 – they will need the support of other parties.
  • In his victory speech in Ontario’s Nepean, Carney said, US President Trump is trying to break Canadians so that America can own them, asserting that, that will never ever happen. More than once, the PM stressed that Canada is prepared to take on the US.

Nepal To Restrict Everest Permits To Climbers

  • Nepal will issue Everest permits only to climbers with experience of scaling at least one of the Himalayan nation’s 7,000-metre (22,965 ft) peaks, according to the draft of a new law aimed at reducing overcrowding and improving safety.
  • Nepal, which is heavily reliant on climbing, trekking and tourism for foreign exchange, has faced criticism for permitting too many climbers, including inexperienced ones, to try to ascend the 8,849-metre (29,032 ft) peak.
  • This often results in long queues of climbers in the ‘death Zone’, an area below the summit with insufficient natural oxygen for survival.
image 23
  • Overcrowding has been blamed for the high number of deaths on the mountain. At least 12 climbers died, and another five went missing on Everest’s slopes in 2023 when Nepal issued 478 permits. Eight climbers died last year.
  • Mount Everest, known officially and locally as Sagarmatha in Nepal or Qomolangma in Tibet, is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point.
