Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

- Gandhi Jayanti transcends being merely a holiday; it represents a day of national reflection and commitment to Gandhian principles:

Lal Bahadur Shastri
- India prepares to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of one of its most revered leaders, Lal Bahadur Shastri, on October 2, 2024, the nation reflects on the enduring legacy of a man whose principles and leadership continue to inspire generations.
- Born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, Lal Bahadur Shastri emerged from humble beginnings.
- . It was during his student years that he dropped his caste-based surname ‘Srivastava,’ embodying his commitment to breaking social barriers. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call for non-violent resistance, Shastri became actively involved in the Indian independence movement.
- His participation in key nationalist campaigns included:
- The Non-Cooperation Movement (1921)
- The Civil Disobedience Movement (1930)
- The Quit India Movement (1942)
- Upon Nehru’s demise in 1964, Shastri emerged as the natural choice for India’s third Prime Minister. His brief yet impactful tenure (1964-1966) was marked by several significant developments:
- Green Revolution
- Recognizing the importance of agricultural self-sufficiency, Shastri initiated policies that laid the foundation for India’s Green Revolution. He encouraged the adoption of modern farming techniques and high-yielding crop varieties.
- White Revolution
- Under his leadership, the National Dairy Development Board was established, launching Operation Flood, which transformed India into the world’s largest milk producer.
- Indo-Pak War Of 1965
- Shastri’s leadership during the 1965 war with Pakistan showcased his resolve to protect India’s sovereignty. His famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer) resonated deeply with the nation, acknowledging the crucial roles of both military personnel and farmers in nation-building.
Sanitation & Cleanliness Projects
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the Swachh Bharat Diwas 2024 programme on the occasion of the 155th Gandhi Jayanti in New Delhi.
- The event marks the completion of 10 years of the launch of one of the most significant mass movements for cleanliness, the Swachh Bharat Mission. During the programme, Mr Modi will launch and lay the foundation stone for several projects related to sanitation and cleanliness, worth over 9600 crore rupees.
- It will include projects worth over 6800 crore rupees aimed at enhancing urban water and sewage systems under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0, ten projects worth over one thousand 550 crore rupees focused on improving water quality and waste management in Ganga basin areas under National Mission for Clean Ganga and 15 Compressed Biogas Plant projects worth over one thousand 332 crore rupees under GOBARdhan Scheme.
India & Jamaica
- India and Jamaica exchanged four Memorandum of Understanding in the fields of Digital Public Infrastructure, Cultural Exchange and Sports.
- These MoUs were exchanged after delegation-level talks held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting Jamaican counterpart Dr Andrew Holness in New Delhi.
- Prime Minister Modi said that India accords special importance to the visit of the Prime Minister of Jamaica as for the first time Dr. Holness has come on a bilateral visit to India.
- Mr Modi added that India and Jamaica relations are based on our shared history, democratic values and strong people-to-people ties.
- Prime Minister Modi further stated that India is ready to share its experience with Jamaica in areas such as Digital Public Infrastructure, small-scale industries, biofuel, innovation, health, education and agriculture. He added that India will move forward on the training and capacity building of the Jamaican Army in the field of defence.
- Government of India has decided to name the road in front of the Jamaica High Commission in New Delhi as ‘Jamaica Marg’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted during the talks that the India-Jamaica relationship is defined by four Cs- culture, cricket, Commonwealth and Caribbean.
WETEX 2024
- 26th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 began at the Dubai World Trade Centre, featuring a strong Indian presence with 29 leading companies participating in the Indian pavilion.
- The event, organized by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), will continue till the 3rd of this month, showcasing cutting-edge innovations in renewable energy, water treatment, and environmental technologies.
- He emphasized that the companies in the Indian pavilion are demonstrating advanced technologies and sustainable projects that support the green economy and contribute to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
- The robust Indian presence at WETEX reflects the flourishing UAE-India economic relationship, which has gained momentum since the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in May 2022.
- Trade volume between the two nations reached an impressive $84.5 billion from April 2022 to March 2023, with projections suggesting it could hit $100 billion by 2027.
- The UAE has emerged as a significant investor in India, ranking seventh with investments totalling $18 billion in 2023.
- WETEX 2024 features 16 international pavilions from 14 countries, underscoring its global significance in promoting sustainable technologies and fostering international partnerships.
NATO Secretary-General
- Former Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte took over as the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in Brussels.
- He succeeds Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg, who had led the alliance since 2014. In his first press conference as Secretary-General, Rutte called on allies to significantly increase defence spending to meet NATO’s challenges.
- He also urged the alliance to enhance cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners.
BharatGen
- BharatGen was inaugurated in New Delhi, marking a significant step in India’s commitment to generative AI.
- The initiative aims to enhance public service delivery and citizen engagement by developing foundational models in language, speech, and computer vision.
- Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for various portfolios, emphasized BharatGen’s role in positioning India as a global leader in generative AI, similar to the transformative impact of UPI.
- Key Objectives
- BharatGen, led by IIT Bombay under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), focuses on creating generative AI systems that produce high-quality text and multimodal content in various Indian languages. The project is implemented by the TIH Foundation for IoT and IOE at IIT Bombay, with contributions from several premier institutions, including IIIT Hyderabad and IIM Indore.
- Core Features
- The initiative is distinguished by four key features:
- Multilingual and Multimodal Models: BharatGen will create foundational models that cater to diverse Indian languages and formats.
- Bhartiya Dataset: The project will prioritize the development and training of AI systems using India-centric datasets.
- Open-Source Platform: BharatGen will promote an open-source ecosystem for generative AI research in India.
- Focus on Data Sovereignty: The initiative emphasizes collecting and curating data that accurately represents India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
‘Jal Saheli’ Volunteers
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the water volunteers called ‘jal saheli’ of Jhansi district whose efforts transformed the river Ghurari of Babina area in the district.
- Women of the group from Simrawari village of Jhansi district said that earlier the water got wasted because there was no check dam.
- People also used to witness the scarcity of drinking water in summers. After which they decided to work collectively for the rejuvenation of the river.
ISSF Junior World Championship
- Ace Indian shooter Parth Rakesh Mane picked up a double gold in the 10m air rifle along with winning the men’s team event on day three of the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru.
- After winning the 10m air rifle individual title, Parth, combining with Ajay Malik and Abhinav Shaw, won gold in the 10m air rifle men’s team event.
- India’s third gold of the day came when Gautami Bhanot, Sambhavi Kshirsagar and Anoushka Thakur won the junior women’s 10m air rifle team event.
- In Shooting, the Indian pair of Gautami Bhanot and Ajay Malik clinched Bronze after defeating Croatia 17-9 in the Air Rifle mixed event in the ISSF Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru.
- In the same event, China defeated France to win gold.
- In the Air Pistol mixed event, India’s Lakshita and Pramod defeated Kanishka Dagar and Mukesh Nellavani 16-8 to win another Bronze in the tally. Germany won the gold medal, while Ukraine settled for a silver.
SAFF Under-17
- In Football, India secured the SAFF Under-17 Championship title defeating Bangladesh 2-0 in the final played at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan today. Mohammed Kaif secured the winning goal in the 58th minute by heading the ball past the opposing goalkeeper from a corner delivered by Ngamgouhou Mate. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Nazmul Huda Faysal extended India’s lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.
