Surajkund International Crafts Mela

  • President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2024 in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • President Murmu said art and craft persons are the creative ambassadors of humanity. She lauded the artists and craft persons for preserving the rich art legacy of India.

  • The President informed that Tanzania’s participation as the partner country at the Surajkund Mela highlights India’s engagement with the African Union.
  • She also appreciated the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat that will be on display during the Mela.
  • The fair will showcase the richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms, and the cultural heritage of India. Around 50 countries will participate in the Mela.

  • These countries include Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, and Sri Lanka, among others. It will remain open to the public till the 18th of this month.
  • Tanzania will participate as the Partner Nation in the craft mela. Gujarat is the theme state, which is showcasing its unique culture and rich heritage through various art forms and handicrafts from the region.

PM Modi To Inaugurate CLEA

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) – Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference in New Delhi tomorrow.
  • The theme of the conference is Cross-Border Challenges in Justice Delivery. This conference will deliberate on important issues pertaining to law and justice like judicial transition and the ethical dimensions of legal practice, executive accountability, and revisiting modern-day legal education, among others.

  • Attorney Generals and Solicitors from the Commonwealth nations spanning the Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Caribbean along with various international delegations will participate in the conference.
  • The conference serves as a unique platform by offering a forum for interaction among different stakeholders in the Commonwealth legal fraternity.
  • It also includes an exclusive round table conference tailored for Attorneys and Solicitors general aiming to develop a comprehensive roadmap to address the challenges in legal education and transnational justice delivery.

Bharat Mobility Global Expo

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, a groundbreaking event in India’s automotive landscape.
  • This expo aims to highlight India’s emergence as a global hub for mobility. With over 800 exhibitors and 50 overseas participants, the event covers the entire mobility value chain.
  • India, one of the largest vehicle markets, aims to increase the export share from the current 14% to 25% of all passenger vehicles by 2030.

Kalaignar Sports Kit

Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril

  • Tamil Nadu government, under the leadership of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has taken a significant step towards improving public service delivery and expediting the implementation of various schemes through the launch of the “Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril” (Bringing Services to Your Doorstep) scheme.
  • This innovative initiative aims to bridge the gap between the government and the public by ensuring that the benefits of various schemes reach the grassroots level.

  • “Ungalai Thedi, Ungal Ooril” is designed to enhance the efficiency and transparency of service delivery in the state. Under this scheme, Collectors and senior district-level officials are mandated to spend 24 hours in one taluk on the fourth Wednesday of every month.
  • This dedicated time will be utilized to review the functioning of various projects, inspect infrastructure, and directly engage with the public to understand their needs and grievances.
  • To ensure the scheme’s success and uniform coverage across districts, Collectors are instructed to prepare an annual calendar.
  • Additionally, adequate publicity measures are to be taken to maximize public participation, allowing individuals to air their grievances and receive timely redressal.

Surat Airport Attains International Airport Status

  • Surat Airport, located in Gujarat, has officially been granted recognition as an International Airport by the Indian government, marking a significant milestone overseen by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • This strategic decision highlights Surat’s growing economic potential and aims to bolster its global connectivity, particularly considering the city’s stature as a vibrant center for the diamond and textile industries.
  • Elevating Surat Airport to international status is expected to stimulate economic development, attract foreign investments, and fortify diplomatic relations with other countries.

  • The designation as an International Airport is poised to generate a notable increase in both passenger traffic and cargo operations, fostering regional development and advancing globalization endeavors.
  • With enhanced import-export mechanisms, Surat Airport is positioned to play a pivotal role in facilitating international trade.

UP’s Mission To Eradicate Filariasis

  • Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a mission to eradicate filariasis from the state. As part of this, the government will conduct the Annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Campaign from February 5th to 15th, 2024.

  • Filariasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites. It can lead to conditions like swelling of limbs and genitals. The government aims to eliminate this disease from the country by 2027.
  • The 15-day campaign will cover 17 districts in UP. These are Amethi, Azamgarh, Ballia, Banda, Barabanki, Bareilly, Hamirpur, Jaunpur, Jalaun, Lucknow, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Unnao, and Varanasi. Presently, 51 districts in UP are affected by filariasis. The MDA will expand to cover the rest of the districts from August 10, 2024
  • Health workers will go door-to-door to administer preventive medication to all residents except children under 2 years, pregnant women and seriously ill people.

  • The government has asked people to take the medication even without symptoms. Symptoms can take 5-15 years to show up after infection, Once infected, the disease is irreversible and only management is possible, Preventive efforts can safeguard the next generation.

Talabira Thermal Power Project

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of Talabira Thermal Power Project of Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited, under the Coal Ministry in Odisha.

  • According to the Ministry, the project worth over 27,000 crore rupees will focus on producing electricity at a cost of 3.65 rupees per unit. The state-of-the-art project aims to provide reliable, affordable and continuous power, making a significant contribution to the nation’s energy security and playing a crucial role in driving economic growth.
  • The Ministry said that the thermal power plant will ensure higher efficiency, reduced carbon footprint and an impressive 10 percent eco-friendly biomass co-firing initiative.
