BharatGen
- Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched ‘Bharat Gen’ – India’ s first of its kind Indigenously developed government funded AI based Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) for Indian Languages at BharatGen Summit in New Delhi. BharatGen aims to revolutionize AI development across India’s linguistic and cultural spectrum.
- The initiative is supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and brings together a robust consortium of leading academic institutions, experts, and innovators.
- Speaking at the Summit, Dr. Singh, described BharatGen as a national mission to create AI that is ethical, inclusive, multilingual, and deeply rooted in Indian values and ethos. The platform integrates text, speech, and image modalities, offering seamless AI solutions in 22 Indian languages.
- He said that this initiative will empower critical sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, delivering region-specific AI solutions that understand and serve every Indian. The Minister said that AI doctors speaking in regional languages have revolutionized telemedicine in remote villages.
Goa Achieves Full Functional Literacy
- Goa has recently been declared fully literate under the ULLAS Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. Goa is now the second state in India to surpass the 95% literacy benchmark. This milestone aligns with India’s goal of achieving full literacy by 2030, as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Full literacy is crucial for socio-economic development.
- It empowers individuals and enhances community participation. Literate populations tend to have better health outcomes and improved economic prospects.
- Goa’s achievement serves as a model for other states aiming for similar goals. The ULLAS scheme, initiated in 2022, focuses on adult literacy. It targets individuals aged 15 years and above who have not had formal education.
- The programme includes five key components – Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Critical Life Skills, Basic Education, Vocational Skills, and Continuing Education. The scheme is designed to be inclusive and volunteer-driven. The Government of Goa employed a Whole-of-Government approach. Various departments collaborated to identify non-literate individuals.
- Key departments included the Directorate of Panchayats, Directorate of Municipal Administration, and Directorate of Social Welfare. This inter-departmental cooperation was essential for the success of the initiative.
- Swayampurna Mitras played a vital role in the literacy campaign. They conducted awareness programmes and assisted learners in obtaining literacy certifications. Their involvement ensured that the campaign reached a broader audience, facilitating the integration of learners into educational modules. Community involvement was a mainstay of the ULLAS initiative.
- Local administrations, school heads, and volunteers contributed to the effort. Their dedication helped in identifying learners and promoting the importance of literacy. This grassroots approach encourageed a sense of ownership among citizens. Goa’s success in achieving full literacy sets a precedent for other states.
- It marks the effectiveness of people-centric literacy campaigns. The state serves as a beacon of progress, embodying the spirit of Jan-Jan Sakshar. This achievement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat. The ULLAS programme continues to be implemented across India. As more states strive to emulate Goa’s success, the focus will remain on expanding literacy and educational opportunities. The commitment to adult education is crucial for achieving the national goal of full literacy by 2030.
Ghatampur Thermal Power Project
- Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, signifies a very important advancement in India’s energy landscape. Located in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, this project aims to address the growing electricity demands of the region and neighbouring states.
- It is a collaborative effort between Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd, NLC India Limited, and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. The project is set to enhance energy security while promoting sustainable power generation. The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project consists of three supercritical thermal power units, each with a capacity of 660 MW.
- This totals an impressive 1,980 MW of installed capacity. The total investment for the project stands at ₹21,780.94 crore. The first unit has been dedicated to the nation, while the remaining two units are expected to be operational by FY 2025-26.
- The project has established a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 1,487.28 MW of generated power. Uttar Pradesh will receive 75.12% of this power, while Assam will receive 24.88%.
- This agreement is contingent upon the transfer of a 20% equity share of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited in Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd to the Government of Assam.
- Ghatampur Thermal Power Project incorporates advanced environmental technologies. These include Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) to mitigate nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions.
- Additionally, a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system ensures that no wastewater is released from the plant. The project also features Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems to track emissions effectively. A aspect of the project is its commitment to water conservation.
- Canal lining works covering 288 kilometres are underway to prevent seepage losses, conserving 195 million litres per day (MLD) of water. The raw water reservoirs have a combined capacity of approximately 46 lakh cubic metres. The coal-based supercritical boilers at the plant boast a boiler efficiency of 88.81%.
- The coal stockyard can hold 10.165 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of coal for continuous operation for 30 days at full load. An advanced substation automation system and a 765 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) system facilitate efficient power evacuation.
- The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities. It aims to stimulate socio-economic development in the region, aligning with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Baerbock Elected UNGA President
- Germany’s former foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock elected as the next president of the United Nations General Assembly with strong support, winning 167 votes out of 193 in a secret ballot demanded by Russia.
- Baerbock replaces Cameroon’s Philemon Yang and will begin her one-year term in September, leading the assembly during key events, including the annual world leaders’ meeting and the UN’s 80th anniversary.
- She also becomes the first woman from the Western European group to hold the post and the fifth woman overall to lead the General Assembly. The presidency rotates among the world body’s five regional groups.
- Germany had originally nominated diplomat Helga Schmid but switched to Baerbock after she lost her ministerial role in Germany’s recent election.
- Meanwhile, Russia strongly opposed Baerbock’s candidacy, calling her biased and unfit due to her tough stance against Moscow. Despite this, Baerbock said she was honoured by the strong support and is ready to work with all countries.
- In her acceptance speech, Baerbock said her theme will be “Better Together”, stressing the importance of global cooperation during uncertain times. She highlighted ongoing global conflicts and the need for the UN to fulfil its mission of preventing war.

Gukesh Stuns Carlsen In Norway
- Reigning World Champion D. Gukesh defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the sixth round of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament in Stavanger City last night.
- This marks Gukesh’s first-ever classical win over Carlsen. Carlsen had seemed in control for much of the game, but like the unpredictable Stavanger weather, everything changed in a blink.
- The Indian teenager, playing with the white pieces, held firm under pressure and capitalised on a rare blunder by the 34-year-old Norwegian Grandmaster in the endgame, converting it into a memorable win. It was a stinging defeat for Carlsen, coming just days after he had outplayed Gukesh with the white pieces in Round 1 of the prestigious tournament.
- Before Round 6, Carlsen led the standings with 9.5 points, followed by Fabiano Caruana (8) and Hikaru Nakamura (6.5). Gukesh’s breakthrough win has shaken up the title race as the tournament heads into its decisive final rounds.
