WAVES 2025
- India hosted the first Global Media Dialogue (GMD) as part of the World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit in Mumbai. The dialogue was organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, with support from the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
- The summit saw the participation of delegates from 77 countries that culminated in the adoption of the WAVES Declaration by the member nations. The Global Media Dialogue, held in Mumbai as part of the ongoing WAVES 2025, centred on the role of governments in promoting global peace and harmony within an increasingly interconnected media landscape.
- The dialogue emphasised the powerful role of films in bridging cultural divides, with participating nations recognising the significant contribution of Indian cinema in fostering cross-cultural understanding.
- Meanwhile, the WAVES Bazaar, another key component of WAVES 2025, has already recorded confirmed business transactions worth ₹254 crore across the film, music, animation, radio, and VFX sectors in just two days.
- Several major business agreements have been signed between Indian and international film industry stakeholders, underscoring the event’s role as a hub for global media collaboration.
- WAVES Declaration was adopted during the Global Media Dialogue, and the member nations agreed to collaborate on giving voice to traditions and heritage. The delegates from 77 countries participated in the Global Media Dialogue at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.
- They also agreed to support content that respects human rights and cultural sensitivities while fostering cross-border collaborations to deepen shared understanding. chieving another milestone, a film project titled Khidki Gaon from the Viewing Room vertical of WAVES Bazaar has finalised its post-production and VFX deal with the Asian Cinema Fund, the business fund market of the Busan International Film Festival.
- The project is valued at 2 crore rupees. A business deal is currently under discussion between OML (Only Much Louder) and Gazprom Media (Russia) to sign an MoU for collaborating on a cross-cultural festivals project between Russia and India, aimed at creating collaborative content for global audiences.
- Additionally, Broadvision Perspectives (India) and Fabrique d’Images Group (Europe) announced a €30 million four-film co-production alliance at WAVES Mumbai, under the Indo-French and Indo-Belgian official treaties. With each animated feature budgeted at €6-8 million, this multi-country treaty collaboration marks one of the largest Indo-European animation deals in recent history.
- A major Indo-UK creative alliance was also unveiled at WAVES 2025. Amanda Groom, Founder & CEO of the UK-based The Bridge, and Munjal Shroff, Co-founder of India’s Graphiti Studios, formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-produce a slate of factual television series under the India-UK audiovisual co-production framework.
- One of the most talked-about highlights at WAVES 2025 was the major announcement by Makiko Inaba, Director of the International Business Department at TV Asahi Corporation. She unveiled the launch of the “Shin Chan India Year – a landmark cultural initiative underscoring Crayon Shin-chan’s immense popularity in India.
- With over three decades of global acclaim and deep-rooted success in the Indian market, Shin-chan continues to capture hearts across generations. The announcement included the Indian theatrical release of the record-breaking Shin Chan: Our Dinosaur Diary on May 9, following its successful premiere in Mumbai. A second India-centric film, The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers in India, is slated for release during Diwali 2025.
Angola President Arrives In New Delhi
- President of Angola João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço arrived in New Delhi this morning on a day State Visit to India. He was accorded a special welcome and received by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh at the airport. Mr Laurenco is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including several Ministers, senior officials, business houses and media.
- A visit by the President of Angola to India is taking place after 38 years. The visit comes at a time when India and Angola are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. President Laurenco will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan tomorrow.
- Besides, President Laurenco will have delegation level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also host a luncheon in his honour. Several MoUs and Agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, which shall give a fillip to bilateral relations.
- On Sunday, President Laurenco will participate in a business event in New Delhi, aimed at promoting investment and commercial linkages between the two countries.
- Bilateral trade between the two countries has been growing and reached 4.192 billion dollars during 2023-2024. The Development Partnership, Capacity-Building Cooperation, and Defence relationship have also been expanding. Both countries support each other’s candidature at various multilateral for, including in the UN.
Mike Waltz
- US President Donald Trump has nominated Mike Waltz as the next US Ambassador to the United Nations. Waltz, a former soldier, congressman, and Trump’s current National Security Advisor, is expected to bring his experience to the new role. In the meantime, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also serve as National Security Advisor, taking on both roles temporarily.
- Trump announced his social media platform, Truth Social, praising Waltz’s dedication to national interests and expressing confidence in his leadership. The National Security Advisor role has seen frequent changes during Trump’s presidency. Previous advisors included Michael Flynn, HR McMaster, John Bolton, and Robert O’Brien. O’Brien served the longest, staying in the position until the end of Trump’s term in 2021.
ECB Bans Transgender Females
- England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced today that transgender females will no longer be able to take part in all levels of women’s and girls’ cricket across England and Wales, with immediate effect.
- Previously, transgender females were prohibited from competing in the top two tiers of elite women’s cricket and The Hundred since the beginning of the year. However, at that time, the ECB had permitted them to compete in tier three of the domestic women’s game and in recreational cricket. This policy shift comes in response to the UK Supreme Court’s April 15 ruling, which defined “woman” in legal terms as based on biological sex.
- ECB’s decision follows similar moves by other sports governing bodies. Yesterday, the English Football Association (FA) declared that transgender females would be ineligible to compete in women’s football starting June 1. England Netball also announced that transgender females will be excluded from women’s competitions beginning September 1.
First National Mediation Conference
- President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the first National Mediation Conference in New Delhi. Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal will also address the conference.
- The event is being organised by Office of the Attorney General of India in association with the Ministry of Law and Justice.
- Attorney General R Venkataramani said that the conference will bring together a large number of mediation and arbitration institutions so that they can discuss and share best practices with regard to the mediation process.
- Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice Ajay Arora said that the purpose behind organising this event is to motivate the litigants to follow the mediation process for resolving the cases to bring down the pendency of cases in the courts.
MMA Debuts & Cricket Retained For Asian Games 2026
- Asian Games 2026, scheduled to take place in Japan from September 19 to October 4, will feature some exciting developments in its sports programme. For the first time, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will be included, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of combat sports on the international stage.
- Additionally, cricket, a beloved sport in Asia, will make its fourth appearance at the Games. These decisions have been confirmed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which officially approved the inclusion of both sports during its board meeting on April 28, 2025.
- The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has confirmed that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will make its debut at the Asian Games 2026, scheduled to be held in Japan’s Aichi and Nagoya prefectures.
- Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will debut at the 2026 Asian Games with six medal events. MMA is increasingly popular worldwide, particularly in Asia, and is seen as a growing segment in countries like India.
- Cricket, which had been dropped from the 2018 edition, will be part of the 2026 Asian Games, continuing its return since its re-inclusion in 2023.
