Int’nl Day To End Impunity For Crimes Against Journalists

  • The annual observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalist, marked on November 2nd, draws attention to the perils and hostility encountered by journalists and media professionals during the course of their work.
  • In General Assembly Resolution A/RES/68/163, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 2nd as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists’, urging member states to take concrete actions to combat the prevailing climate of impunity.
  • This date was selected to honor the memory of two French journalists who were assassinated in Mali on November 2, 2013.

Nandini Das Winner British Academy Book Prize 2023

  • India-born author Nandini Das has been named the winner of the 2023 British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding, a leading international non-fiction prize, for her book ‘Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire’. Das is a Professor of English literatre at the University of Oxford.
  • The winning book is her debut and has been described by critics as the “true origin story of Britain and India told through England’s first diplomatic mission to the Mughal courts”.
  • The author has sought to present a new perspective on the origins of empire through the story of the arrival of the first English ambassador in India, Sir Thomas Roe, in the early 17th century.

NSDCI & EFS – Skilled Workforce Mobility

  • National Skill Development Corporation of India and EFS Facilities Services Group (EFS), a Facilities Management Firm based in the UAE, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote Skilled International Workforce Mobility (IWM) for Indian nationals, with a specific focus on the GCC countries.

  • The MoU outlines the collaborative efforts of these two entities to structure a principle framework for achieving the common objective of promoting skilled workforce mobility.

  • The partnership also aims to develop co-branded skilling institutions to equip Indian nationals with the skills needed for international and local employment, and to create access to approximately 5000 overseas jobs for skilled Indian nationals over the next three years.
  • Additionally, NSDCI and EFS will jointly develop courses for the Skill India Digital App and support accreditation and curriculum development for various training institutes.
  • The primary objective of this MoU is to promote Skilled International Workforce Mobility (IWM) for Indian nationals, with a specific focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which include the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.
  • The two entities are working together to establish a foundational framework aimed at promoting skilled workforce mobility.

Saima Wazed

  • Saima Wazed, daughter of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, won a decisive victory in the election for the WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, securing eight out of ten votes.
  • In a recent development, Bangladesh’s Saima Wazed, daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, emerged victorious in the election for the next World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for South-East Asia.
  • She secured a significant majority of votes, surpassing her opponent, Nepal’s Shambhu Prasad Acharya.
  • WHO South-East Asia Region (SEARO) The SEARO is one of the six regions within the World Health Organization, with its headquarters located in New Delhi.
  • This regional body plays a crucial role in addressing public health challenges and promoting healthcare initiatives in the South-East Asian countries.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Statue At Wankhede Stadium

  • A significant event is set to take place at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium as a statue of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar is scheduled for unveiling during the World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka.
  • This notable sculpture is the masterpiece of artist Pramod Kamble, a renowned painter and sculptor hailing from Ahmednagar.

  • Adding to the moment’s significance is the placement of Sachin Tendulkar’s statue at the Wankhede Stadium, a ground that remained his home throughout his illustrious career.
  • This unveiling serves as a befitting homage, nearly a decade after Tendulkar’s final match for India at this very venue—a Test match against the West Indies in November 2013.
  • Earlier this year, on Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th birthday in April, the decision to install a statue at Wankhede Stadium was disclosed, making this unveiling an exceptional tribute to the cricketing legend.

SBI’s Branch In Trincomalee Sri Lanka

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated State Bank of India’s branch in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
  • Recognizing SBI’s 159-year-long presence, Mrs. Sitharaman praised its commitment to growth at home and abroad, especially during the Sri Lankan economic crisis.
  • SBI’s endeavors facilitated the smooth extension of a Line of Credit worth 1 billion dollars by the Government of India to Sri Lanka.
  • She noted that SBI Sri Lanka has been a pivotal support for international trade corporations and has actively bolstered remittance activities through a robust digital platform.

Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

  • The King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck will arrive in India tomorrow on an eight-day official visit.
  • The Bhutan King will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. He will also visit Assam and Maharashtra.
  • The External Affairs Minister and senior officials of Government of India will call on the King of Bhutan.
  • The External Affair Ministry said that the visit will provide an opportunity to both the sides to review the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation and to further advance the exemplary bilateral partnership, across diverse sectors.

‘ENCORE’

  • The Election Commission of India has designed in-house software for complete Candidate and election management through ‘ENCORE’ which stands for Enabling Communications on Real-time Environment.
  • This provides a seamless facility for Returning Officers to process candidate nomination, affidavit, Voter turnout, counting, results and data management.
  • The ENCORE counting application is an end-to-end application for returning officers to digitize the votes polled, tabulate the round-wise data and then take out various statutory reports of counting.
  • ENCORE Scrutiny Application allows Returning Officers to do scrutiny of the nominations filed by the candidates on-line. After  verification of the nomination the status is marked as Accepted, Rejected or Withdrawn helping the Returning Officer to prepare the final list of contesting candidates and assign the symbols.

  • The ECI also has an online portal for filling the nomination and affidavit. The Candidate can create his or her account, fill nomination form, deposit the security and plan his visit to the Returning Officer. Once the application is filled through the online portal, the candidate only needs to take a printout, get it notarized and submit the application along with relevant documents to the Returning Officer in person.  
  • An application called candidate Affidavit portal  is for displaying information about a candidate’s finances, assets and their liabilities. Whereas through the ENCORE Nodal App, various departments like fire, education, police, environment, CPWD give ‘no objection’ certificate before any permission request from political party or candidates, received for holding rallies, road shows and meetings.

Tata Power Renewable Energy

  • Tata Power, one of India’s leading integrated power companies, announced a significant leadership change as it appointed Deepesh Nanda as the President-Renewables and the CEO & MD of its subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL).
  • This move, effective from November 1, 2023, marks a strategic step in Tata Power’s journey towards becoming a dominant force in the renewable energy sector. Prior to joining Tata Power, he served as the Chief Executive Officer for South Asia at GE Gas Power, overseeing operations in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Nepal.
  • Nanda also held the position of President & CEO of GE’s Aero-derivative Gas Turbine business segment for Asia, solidifying his standing as a seasoned leader in the energy sector.

World’s 1st Agreement – Risks Associated With AI

  • India, along with 27 other countries and the European Union have signed world’s first agreement on artificial intelligence (AI) safety at a meeting in the United Kingdom. The agreement pledges to work together to assess the risks associated with artificial intelligence.
  • A two-day ‘AI Safety Summit 2023’ began at United Kingdom’s World War II code-breaking centre in Bletchley Park.

  • In a statement, the UK government said, the agreement will be known as the Bletchley Declaration.
  • Addressing the gathering at world’s first global summit on Artificial Intelligence, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, India looks at AI with a prism of openness, safety, trust and accountability.
