Digital Agriculture Mission

  • Union Cabinet has approved the Digital Agriculture Mission with total cost of 2817 crore rupees. Addressing media in New Delhi this afternoon, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said major decisions have been taken in the cabinet meeting for improving the lives of farmers and increasing their income.
  • He said the Digital Agriculture Mission is being developed on lines of the structure of Digital Public Infrastructure for agriculture.

  • Cabinet has approved crop science for food and nutritional security at a total cost of 3979 crore rupees.
  • Government has also decided to strengthen agriculture education, management, and social science at a cost of 2291 crore rupees.
  • Cabinet approved sustainable livestock health and production with cost of 1702 crore rupees. It approved sustainable development of Horticulture with cost of 860 crore rupees.
  • The Union Cabinet has decided to strengthen the Krishi Vigyan Kendra with the cost of 1202 crore rupees and natural resources management with a cost of 1115 crore rupees.
  • Cabinet also approved a 309 Kilometre long new line project providing the shortest rail connectivity between two major commercial hubs – Mumbai and Indore – at total cost of 18,036 crores.
  • The project will be completed by 2028-29.

Agriculture Infrastructure Fund

  • Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will launch the AgriSURE Fund and Krishi Nivesh Portal in New Delhi.
  • Mr Chouhan will also confer the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund – AIF Excellence Awards to the top-performing banks and states under various categories to recognize and appreciate their efforts.
  • Ministers of State and representatives from various States and Banks will be present on the occasion. The AIF was launched in 2022 to create post-harvest management infrastructure and community farming assets.

‘Financing 3.0’ Summit in Mumbai

  • Chief Economic Advisor, V Anantha Nageswaran said that policy autonomy and managing global capital outflows effectively will safeguard India’s growth momentum.
  • Addressing the  inaugural session of ‘Financing 3.0’ Summit, organised by  Confederation of Indian Industry  in Mumbai, Mr. Nageswaran said with a modest current account deficit, India has one of the brightest global economic growth prospects.

  • Issuing a note of caution against ‘financialization’, which refers to the dominance of the role of financial markets in public policy, Mr. Nageswaran said it can lead to a massive surge in inequality that can distort macroeconomic outcomes and policy discourse.
  • Chairman of the State Bank of India, Mr. C S Setty emphasised the need to develop the corporate bond market. He said insurance companies, mutual funds and pension funds should participate in the corporate bond market to help channel more capital into the markets.

Kaynes Semicon

  • Cabinet has approved  the proposal of Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd to setup a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. The decision has been taken with the objective to develop a vibrant semiconductor ecosystem.
  • The proposed unit will be setup with an investment of 3,300 crore rupees.

  • The capacity of this unit will be 60 Lakh chips per day. The chips produced in this unit will cater to a wide variety of applications. These include segments such as industrial, automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
  • The Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was notified in December 2021 with a total outlay of 76 thousand crore rupees.
  • Construction of all four semiconductor units is progressing at a rapid pace. These four units will bring an investment of almost 1.5 Lakh crore rupees. The cumulative capacity of these units is about seven crore chips per day.

Ramon Magsaysay Award

  • Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned Japanese film director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has been awarded the esteemed Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2024. This honor, often referred to as “Asia’s Nobel Prize,” underscores Miyazaki’s profound impact on both the art of animation and global cultural discourse.

  • Miyazaki’s illustrious career spans decades, during which he has created a pantheon of beloved animated films that have captivated audiences worldwide.
  • His works, including: “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Spirited Away”, “Princess Mononoke” , “Howl’s Moving Castle” , “Ponyo” , “The Boy and the Heron”. 
  • The Ramon Magsaysay Award, established in 1957, stands as one of the most prestigious honors in Asia. It was created to commemorate Ramon Magsaysay, the third president of the Philippines, who was known for his integrity in governance and public service.

7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024

  • 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah was launched at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, marking a significant step towards enhancing nutrition awareness and well-being across the nation.
  • Four key pillars of Poshan 2.0: good governance, convergence, capacity building, and community participation. An exhibition at the venue showcased key initiatives such as the Poshan Tracker and Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, along with state-specific programs like ‘Vangi Pradarshan’ and the 181 helpline.
  • Regional cultural performances and plays highlighted important themes such as breastfeeding and complementary feeding, reinforcing the significance of nutrition.

  • The 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 will focus on Anaemia, Growth Monitoring, Complementary Feeding, Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi, Technology for Better Governance, and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.
  • In line with the Prime Minister’s vision of a ‘Suposhit Bharat,’ Smt. Annpurna Devi described Poshan Maah as evolving into a nationwide festival and Jan Andolan.
  • Through Mission Poshan 2.0, the Ministry of Women and Child Development is committed to combating malnutrition among children, adolescents, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, aiming to promote holistic well-being across the country.

Vadhvan Port Project

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a major new project called the Vadhvan Port in Palghar, Maharashtra.
  • This project is expected to cost around ₹76,000 crore and aims to make Vadhvan one of the top ten ports in the world.
  • The Vadhvan Port is being designed to handle a massive amount of cargo, specifically 23.2 million TEUs, which are standard-sized containers used in shipping.

  • The port will be able to accommodate large container ships and is meant to serve as a top-tier maritime gateway that will boost India’s trade and help the economy grow.
  • The port will be located near Dahanu, a strategic spot because it will be a deep-water port, meaning it can handle very large ships. Its location near major international shipping routes will help reduce the time and cost of shipping goods for businesses in India.

  • Indian paddler Divyanshi Bhowmick clinched a Bronze medal in the Under-19 Youth Girls Singles Event at the World Table Tennis Youth Contender Varazdin 2024 ARENA VARAŽDIN in Croatia.

  • Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championships in Mungyeong, South Korea, India’s Himanshi Tokas clinched the Silver medal in the Women’s 63-kilogram event .

  • At the Deaf Shooting Championship in Hanover, Germany, India secured a total of four medals including one gold, two silver, and one bronze. Anuya Prasad won gold in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event.
  • Abhinav Deshwal earned silver in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol, while the trio of Abhinav Deshwal, Shubham Vashist, and Chetan Sapkal also clinched silver in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Team event.
  • Additionally, Shubham Vashist won bronze in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol.

Paralympic Games

  • Para Athlete Preethi Pal secured yet another medal for India, clinching a Bronze medal in the Women’s 200 meters – T35 Final. She won the medal with a personal best timing of 30.01 seconds.

  • Indian athlete Nishad Kumar also won a silver medal with an effort of 2.04 meter in Men’s High Jump – T47 event.
  • Yogesh Kathuniya clinched silver in men’s discus throw F56 final
  • Para shuttler Nitesh Kumar bagged his first gold medal after beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in the medal match of the men’s singles SL3 class.
