First Ever Riverine Dolphin Estimation
- During the 7th meeting of the National Board for Wildlife at Sasan Gir in Junagadh district, the Prime Minister released the report of the first-ever riverine dolphin estimation conducted in the country, which estimated a total of 6,327 dolphins.
- This pioneering effort involved surveying 28 rivers across eight states, with 3,150 man-days dedicated to covering over 8,500 kilometres. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest numbers, followed by Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of awareness of dolphin conservation through the involvement of the local population and villagers in these areas. He emphasized the role of eco-tourism in wildlife conservation and stressed the need for improved travel and connectivity for wildlife tourism.
12th Regional 3R & Circular Economy Forum
- Pinkcity Jaipur is all set to host the 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum in Asia and the Pacific. This three-day Event kicks off today at the Rajasthan International Centre, Jaipur.
- The forum focuses on “Realizing Circular Societies Towards Achieving SDGs and Carbon Neutrality in Asia-Pacific. Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, will inaugurate the event in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Bhajanlal Sharma.
- Forum aims to provide strategic policy inputs to government authorities in the Asia-Pacific region for mainstreaming 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) and circularity and serve as a platform for disseminating and sharing best practices in 3R.
- The takeaway of the 12th Regional Forum will be the Jaipur Declaration for 2025-34. It will aim to provide participating countries with a framework for developing 3R and circular economy policies and programs. Agreements for 18 cities will be signed in the event to activate the CITIIS 2.0 program, which includes integrated waste management projects.
India Rejects UN Rights Chief’s Remarks
- India strongly rejected comments made by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk in his global update at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Speaking at the UN, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Mr Arindam Bagchi, called the remarks unfounded and baseless, saying they did not reflect the reality on the ground.
- Bagchi emphasized that India is the world’s largest democracy with a vibrant and diverse society. He criticized Turk’s reference to Kashmir and Manipur and used Kashmir instead of Jammu and Kashmir.
- Mr Bagchi highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s high voter turnout, booming tourism, and rapid development. India also expressed concern over the UN report’s oversimplifications and cherry-picking of issues.
- Mr Bagchi urged the UN rights office to take a long and hard look in the mirror. Turk’s update covered various global conflicts, including Ukraine and Gaza, but did not mention Pakistan.
India-Nepal
- India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to enhance cooperation in the Water Sanitation, Hygiene sector, and waste management.
- The primary agenda of the agreement is to promote collaboration between the two nations and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation in the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) sector, ensuring better access to clean drinking water and sanitation for their populations.
- Speaking at the event, Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, emphasized that the MoU reflects the shared commitment of both countries towards public health, sustainability, and regional cooperation. Our correspondent reports that the MoU marks a new chapter in the India-Nepal partnership, ensuring that both countries work together for the well-being of their people and for a sustainable future.
EAM Jaishankar To Embark Visit To UK, Ireland
- External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will embark on an official visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland. India and the UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the bilateral relations have strengthened across diverse areas, including defence, security, trade, economy, health, education, and people-to-people ties.
- During the visit to the UK, Dr S. Jaishankar will hold discussions with Foreign Secretary David Lammy and meet with other key dignitaries to further deepen cooperation.
- Following this, on his two-day visit to Ireland, he will engage in talks with his Irish counterpart Simon Harris and other dignitaries. During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar will also meet with members of the Indian community. India and Ireland share friendly bilateral relations based on shared democratic values, cultural ties, and growing economic engagements.
Trump Declared English As The Official Language
- President Donald Trump announced that English would be the official language of the country. He said that this decision would help bring unity in a nation with people from different backgrounds.
- The White House released an executive order stating that it was “long past time” to make English the official language of the United States.
- Earlier, under President Bill Clinton, a rule required federal agencies and organizations that receive government money to provide services in multiple languages. This rule has now been removed.
- Government offices and federally funded organizations whether they want to provide documents and services in languages other than English.
Krishna Jayasankar
- India’s Krishna Jayasankar made history at the 2025 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships by becoming the first Indian woman to cross the 16-metre mark in indoor shot put. Her record-breaking throw measured 16.03 metres.
- The 22-year-old broke the previous Indian indoor record of 15.54 metres. Poornarao Rane set that record at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
- Krishna was in fourth place until the penultimate round. However, she clinched the bronze medal with her final throw.
- Mya Lesnar of the USA bagged the Gold while compatriot Gabby Morns claimed a sliver. Krishna’s previous best indoor throw was 15.03 metres, recorded last month at the same venue.
- India’s overall women’s shot put record remains 18.41 m. Abha Khatua set it at the Federation Cup 2024.
